Hoya clemensiorum ‘Round Leaf’

Origin of Hoya clemensiorum ‘Round Leaf’

Hoya clemensiorum ‘Round Leaf’ is a cultivated form of Hoya clemensiorum, although its exact horticultural origin is still unclear.

Hoya clemensiorum is native to Borneo.

Tips for growing Hoya clemensiorum ‘Round Leaf’ at home

• Temperature: A stable 16–24 °C suits routine growth. Place it where temperatures do not linger below 10 °C.
• Provide bright indirect light, sheltered from intense lamps and hot direct sun. Keep Hoya clemensiorum ‘Round Leaf’ warm with high humidity and gentle airflow, and guide the climbing stems onto a trellis.
• Use chunky potting mix in a container with drainage holes. A clear pot lets you see how moist the mix is below the surface. Water when the mix is nearly dry throughout and the pot feels light, soaking the root ball and draining fully. The mix takes longer to reach the same cue when growth slows.
• Feed lightly with balanced orchid fertiliser about every two weeks during active growth. Repot into the next size when roots fill the container.
• Root a healthy stem section with at least one node in a lightly moist, airy propagation mix. Place it warm in indirect light until it is established.

Help with common problems affecting Hoya clemensiorum ‘Round Leaf’

• Leaves lose firmness in a dry pot: The dark vein pattern is normal, and the thick leaves should feel firm. Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• New dry, bleached or crisp patches: Hot sun or a sudden increase in light can scorch leaves. If leaves turn red, look for accompanying dry, bleached or crisp patches and check whether their light exposure has recently increased. Move the plant into bright, filtered light. If you later move it to a brighter position, introduce the stronger light gradually. Existing dry patches will not recover; retain healthy foliage.
• New pale speckling (stippling) or webbing: Inspect damaged leaf undersides with magnification; tapping a leaf over white paper can help locate mites. Confirm spider mites before treatment. Isolate the plant, gently rinse both leaf surfaces and let water drain. Recheck every few days and repeat rinsing while live mites remain.

Hoya clemensiorum ‘Round Leaf’ is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.

Where does the name Hoya clemensiorum come from?

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Hoya clemensiorum commemorates the collectors Joseph and Mary Strong Clemens, whose extensive Bornean work supplied important botanical material.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

Ted Green first described Hoya clemensiorum in 2001 in Fraterna, volume 14, issue 3, page 12.
