Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen Splash'

Origin of Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen Splash'

Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen Splash' is a cultivated form, although it is still unclear when or how it was selected and introduced.

Wild Hoya carnosa occurs from southern China to Laos and southern Japan to Taiwan.

Care basics for Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen Splash'

• Light and patterned foliage: Give ‘Krimson Queen Splash’ bright indirect light and protect the patterned leaves from hot direct sun.
• Growth habit and climate: Let the stems hang or guide them around a hoop. Keep the plant around 16–24 °C, avoid prolonged temperatures below 10 °C and maintain 50–60% humidity with gentle airflow.
• Root-zone moisture: Use an airy, chunky mix. Water when the pot feels lighter and the mix is nearly dry throughout, then soak the root ball and drain it completely. As growth slows, wait longer for the same drying cue.
• Feeding and pot size: Use balanced orchid fertiliser at moderate strength about every two weeks during active growth. Increase pot size only once roots are crowded.
• Propagation: Root a healthy one- or two-node stem cutting in an airy, lightly moist medium under warm, bright indirect conditions.

When Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen Splash' is not growing well

• Leaves lose firmness in a dry pot: Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• New bleached or crisp patches facing the light: Healthy leaves feel firm, including the cream and silver areas. Hot sun or a sudden increase in light can scorch leaves. Move the plant into bright, filtered light. If you later move it to a brighter position, introduce the stronger light gradually. Existing dry patches will not recover; retain healthy foliage.
• New fine speckling (stippling) with webbing: Silver markings are part of the normal leaf pattern. Inspect damaged leaf undersides with magnification; tapping a leaf over white paper can help locate mites. Confirm spider mites before treatment. Isolate the plant, gently rinse both leaf surfaces and let water drain. Recheck every few days and repeat rinsing while live mites remain.
• Cottony insects in sheltered leaf joints: Confirm mealybugs beneath the wax and isolate the plant. Remove visible insects with a damp swab or tweezers. Inspect sheltered leaf joints, stems, the pot and any support weekly, removing any mealybugs you find until none remain. If mealybugs persist, use a product approved for home use against mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants in your country. Follow the label for how much to use, where to apply it, when to repeat treatment and all safety precautions.
