Heptapleurum actinophyllum 'Golden Amate'

Origin and natural habitat

Heptapleurum actinophyllum is native from southern New Guinea to northern Australia. In the wild it grows in warm, humid tropical forest, including wet lowland areas, and can also grow on trees. These conditions provide regular moisture while still allowing plenty of air around the roots.

How to care for ‘Golden Amate’

Keep ‘Golden Amate’ in bright filtered or indirect light. Good light supports strong growth and its yellow-green colour, but pale foliage can scorch if the plant is moved straight into intense sun. Introduce any direct sun slowly.

Water when the potting mix has dried partway and the pot feels noticeably lighter. A large plant should not be left dry long enough to wilt repeatedly, but the roots should never stay constantly wet either.

Use a loose, well-draining mix that still holds some moisture. This species appreciates humid air, especially once it becomes large, so protect it from constant dry heat. If the room is extremely dry, a humidifier can help. Keep the plant warm and away from sudden cold air.

Feed while new leaves are being produced. Once growth pauses, cut back on fertiliser. Repot when the roots are crowded, the mix has become compacted or the plant is starting to become top-heavy. Support a tall stem if it needs it, or cut just above a leaf joint if you want to reduce the height and encourage branching.

Common problems with ‘Golden Amate’

• Patchy bleached or dry brown marks appear on the side facing the window: This is different from the plant’s naturally even yellow-green colour and usually points to sun scorch. Move it back from strong direct sun and increase exposure more gradually next time.
• Leaves yellow, droop or fall: Check the potting mix throughout the pot. Let a wet, heavy pot dry further; water a dry, light pot thoroughly. If the roots are soft and dark, use the root-rot guide before removing any damaged roots.
• New leaves are smaller and the stems are becoming more open: Move the plant into brighter indirect light first. Reassess feeding only once it is growing well again; fertiliser will not solve a shortage of light.
• White cottony clusters or sticky patches appear: Check the leaf stalks and stem joints for mealybugs. Set the plant aside from the rest of your collection, remove visible insects and choose a treatment labelled for mealybugs on houseplants if needed. Repeat it in line with the label instructions. Heptapleurum actinophyllum ‘Golden Amate’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did the name change from Schefflera actinophylla to Heptapleurum actinophyllum?

Heptapleurum combines Greek hepta, meaning seven, with pleuron, meaning rib or side. The epithet actinophyllum means ray-leaved.

Joseph Gaertner established the genus Heptapleurum in 1791 in De Fructibus et Seminibus Plantarum, volume 2, page 472.

Stephan Friedrich Ladislaus Endlicher first described it as Brassaia actinophylla in 1839 in Novarum Stirpium Decades, volume 1, page 89. Porter Prescott Lowry and Gregory M. Plunkett later placed it in Heptapleurum as Heptapleurum actinophyllum in 2020 in Novon, volume 28, page 146.

Schefflera actinophylla is the familiar former name. Porter P. Lowry II and Gregory M. Plunkett reinstated Heptapleurum for the Asian group formerly included in Schefflera in 2020 in Novon, volume 28. Kew’s World Checklist accepts Heptapleurum actinophyllum.
