Goeppertia crocata 'Candela' is a compact flowering prayer plant with dark green leaves, red-toned undersides and bright orange bracts held above the foliage on upright stems. It brings colour into the Goeppertia group through its flowering stems, while still keeping the tropical leaf shape and movement associated with prayer plants.
The orange structures usually described as flowers are showy bracts around the smaller true flowers. On 'Candela', these bracts rise clearly above the leafy clump, while the leaves stay broad, dark and strongly wavy along the edges. The contrast between dark foliage and orange bracts is visible even on a compact plant.
Goeppertia crocata grows as a rhizomatous forest-floor perennial in wet tropical Brazil. Indoors it needs warmth, filtered light, humidity and a root zone that stays evenly moist. The rhizomes produce both leaf growth and flowering stems, so root stress can affect the bracts as well as the leaves.
'Candela' has large dark green leaves, dark red undersides and bright orange bracts. The bracts appear mainly in summer, with possible sporadic flowering at other times of year. Under suitable conditions, Goeppertia crocata bracts can last for a long period.
After a flowering flush, the plant may focus on leaves and rhizome growth before producing another display. This rhythm is normal for a flowering Goeppertia; firm leaves and new basal growth show the plant is still active.
When Goeppertia crocata 'Candela' arrives in bract, keep the plant in stable conditions during that period and let the current flowering stems finish before repotting. Once the stems have faded, fresh basal leaves show that the plant has settled into its new growing space.
Between bract cycles, firm leaves, clean new growth and a root zone that dries slightly between waterings show that the plant is growing steadily. Keep moisture even overall and wait for fresh basal growth before changing the setup.
Goeppertia crocata 'Candela' is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs to cats and dogs. Keep the plant away from pets that chew, since swallowed plant material can still cause mild stomach upset.
Goeppertia crocata belongs to the Marantaceae family and has the older synonym Calathea crocata. The genus name Goeppertia honours Johann Heinrich Robert Goeppert. The species epithet crocata refers to saffron-orange colouring, matching the orange bracts that give this species its “eternal flame” association. 'Candela' names this orange-bracted selection.
Goeppertia crocata 'Candela' combines dark green wavy leaves with upright orange bracts above a compact clump.
