Goeppertia warszewiczii

Native habitat

Goeppertia warszewiczii is native to the warm, humid tropical forests of Central America. Taller forest plants shade it from strong overhead sun and help keep the air humid.

Its large velvety leaves grow in filtered forest light with regular moisture around the roots.

How to care for Goeppertia warszewiczii

• Light: Give it bright indirect light. Strong direct sun can scorch the velvety leaves, and very low light can weaken growth and fade the pattern.
• Watering: Water often enough that the mix stays evenly moist and drains freely. Aim the water at the mix and let excess drain away. As growth slows in cooler or darker periods, allow more time between waterings and check the mix first.
• Humidity: Aim for high humidity, with around 60% or more helpful indoors. Pair high humidity with gentle air movement around the leaves.
• Temperature: Temperatures around 18–24°C suit active growth. The soft foliage can be stressed by cold draughts or sudden temperature changes, especially near a cold window.
• Potting mix: Use a moisture-holding mix with perlite, bark or similar material to keep air around the roots.
• Feeding: Give a balanced houseplant fertiliser about monthly through active growth. Scale back as new growth slows.
• Structure: Give the plant room to spread as it matures. The clump is usually self-supporting. A tall leaning stem can be loosely supported with a soft tie.
• Repotting: Move to a modestly larger pot when roots and rhizomes become crowded.
• Propagation: Divide a well-established plant when fresh leaves are emerging, separating the clump into sturdy pieces that already have roots and several leaves.

Common issues with Goeppertia warszewiczii

• Brown tips or curled margins: Dry air, a dry root ball or mineral-heavy water are common triggers. Raise humidity, water more consistently and try lower-mineral water if the brown tips continue.
• Yellow leaves and limp growth: If the mix stays wet, the roots may be short of air. Inspect them if the plant keeps declining; use disinfected scissors to take off brown mushy roots, discard every cut piece and repot the plant in new, well-drained mix. • Dark or spreading leaf spots: Wet velvety foliage and poor air movement can encourage spotting. Direct routine watering to the mix, remove badly affected foliage and improve gentle airflow.
• Fine speckling or webbing: Check the velvety leaf undersides for spider mites. Isolate the plant and gently remove visible mites, then use a houseplant treatment labelled for spider mites. Repeat only at the interval given on the label.
• Fading leaf pattern: Low light can fade the pattern. Move it to brighter indirect light and look for stronger colour in new leaves.

• Its effects on people are unclear, so keep it away from young children who may chew it.
• Eating a large amount can still cause an upset stomach. Seek medical or veterinary advice if symptoms continue.

Why do both Calathea warszewiczii and Goeppertia warszewiczii appear?

The genus name Goeppertia honours Heinrich Göppert. Warszewiczii commemorates collector Józef Warszewicz.

Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck established the genus Goeppertia in 1831 in Linnaea, volume 6, page 337.

Charles Lemaire first described it as Maranta warszewiczii in 1854 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 1, plate 7. Finn Borchsenius and Luz Stella Suárez later placed it in Goeppertia as Goeppertia warszewiczii in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37, page 635.

The familiar former name is Calathea warszewiczii. Finn Borchsenius, Luz Stella Suárez and Linda M. Prince restored Goeppertia for this group in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37.
