‘Maui Queen’ has long, oval leaves with a deep green outer area and a pale green to creamy band running along the centre. The pale central markings form an irregular pattern, so each leaf has a slightly different look. The undersides are purple and become more noticeable as the leaves change position through the day.
The plant grows from a rhizomatous base into an upright clump. Individual leaves can reach about 20 cm long, and mature plants can eventually reach roughly 0.5–1 m tall under good conditions. New leaves emerge tightly rolled before opening above the older foliage, and the clump becomes denser as the plant matures.
