Goeppertia ‘Fusion Yellow’

Where wild relatives of Goeppertia ‘Fusion Yellow’ grow naturally

The genus Goeppertia is native to tropical America, where many species grow in humid forest shade.

Caring for Goeppertia ‘Fusion Yellow’

• Humidity: ‘Fusion Yellow’ prefers high humidity, especially while new leaves are unfurling. Dry heated air can mark the pale edges quickly. Keep gentle air movement around the foliage.
• Light: Give bright filtered or indirect light. Direct sun can scorch the yellow areas quickly.
• Water: Keep the mix evenly moist, watering as the surface begins to dry. Let excess water drain fully and keep the root ball evenly moist between waterings.
• Temperature: For steady growth, hold temperatures near 18–26 °C and protect the plant from prolonged conditions under 15 °C. Cold windows, draughts and sharp heat changes can damage new growth.
• Potting mix: Use a fine peat-free mix that stays evenly moist while excess water drains readily, in a pot with drainage holes.
• Feeding: Feed monthly while new leaves are developing, using a moderate dose.
• Propagation: Divide a mature clump while fresh growth is underway, keeping healthy roots and at least one growing point with each section.
• Repotting: Repot once the root ball is crowded, preferably while fresh leaves are developing. Refresh compacted mix separately when drainage has deteriorated. Larger established clumps can be divided while fresh growth is underway.

Troubleshooting ‘Fusion Yellow’

• Brown patches on yellow areas: Pale areas show sun scorch and dry-air damage first. Move the plant out of direct sun, improve humidity and watch how the next leaves develop.
• Leaves remain tightly curled and feel limp: Check whether the root ball has dried too far. Water if needed and move the plant away from hot or cold airflow.
• Whole leaves turn yellow: If the pot stays wet for a long time, inspect the roots for rot. Remove soft, dark roots with cleaned, disinfected shears, cutting back to firm, healthy tissue. Discard the affected material, then pot the healthy plant into fresh airy mix.
• Fine pale speckling or webbing: Early spider-mite damage can be easy to miss against the variegation. Isolate the pot, rinse the undersides of the leaves and, if mites persist, apply a houseplant product labelled for them. Repeat treatment only as often as the label directs.

What does the name Goeppertia mean?

The genus name Goeppertia honours Heinrich Göppert.

Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck established the genus Goeppertia in 1831 in Linnaea, volume 6, page 337.

Many plants in this genus are still sold as Calathea. Finn Borchsenius, Luz Stella Suárez and Linda M. Prince restored Goeppertia for this group in 2012 in Systematic Botany, volume 37.
