Goeppertia 'Greenstar', often still labeled under its older Calathea classification, is a striking prayer plant with long, pointed leaves that stand upright like torches. Each leaf is a rich, deep green with a sharp lime-colored midrib that runs through the center – crisp, defined, and consistently vivid. The leaf shape is more elongated than many other Goeppertia cultivars, giving the plant a sleek, vertical presence without looking heavy or cluttered.
As the day shifts, the leaves slightly raise and fold in response to light changes – a classic trait of Marantaceae. 'Greenstar' brings texture, rhythm, and contrast to any collection, especially in bright indirect light where its tones really pop.
Native to the understories of South American rainforests, Goeppertia species evolved in warm, shaded environments with high humidity and moist, loose soil. 'Greenstar' is a cultivar bred for its clean lines and strong midvein contrast – ideal for indoor growers wanting a tropical aesthetic without oversized leaves. As a member of the Marantaceae family, it grows from a rhizomatous base and maintains a tidy, contained footprint.
This plant is non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safer choice for mixed homes with animals or small children.
'Greenstar' appreciates consistency – regular watering, stable temperature, and high humidity will keep it thriving. Rotate the pot occasionally for even growth, and flush the soil every few months to prevent fertiliser buildup. Use rainwater or filtered water if possible to avoid browning tips. This cultivar doesn’t sprawl or get leggy, making it a great fit for narrow spots that need vertical texture.
Goeppertia is the updated genus name for many former Calathea species, honoring 19th-century German botanist Heinrich Göppert. The cultivar name 'Greenstar' reflects the plant’s bold leaf center – a lime stripe radiating like a beam from the petiole to the tip. Though reclassified, it’s still commonly sold as Calathea 'Greenstar'.
