Ficus virens 'Snowstorm' is a variegated fig with leaves that mix green with cream. New leaves may open pink before hardening. Mature leaves can be speckled, marbled or marked with larger cream areas.
Ficus virens grows as a large deciduous to semi-deciduous fig in tropical and subtropical parts of Asia and the Pacific region. Indoors, 'Snowstorm' stays much smaller, with upright stems, variegated leaves and roots that need warmth, drainage and an airy mix.
The cream parts of the leaves have less chlorophyll than green tissue. It grows more slowly than a fully green fig, and harsh sun marks the leaves faster. The plant needs strong light for firm new leaves, but cream sections scorch easily against hot glass or sudden midday sun. Gentle morning or late afternoon sun is safer after acclimation.
Cold, wet roots take up water poorly and may lead to soft yellowing leaves or sudden shedding. A dry root ball during new-leaf expansion can leave brown edges. Water evenly, then let the upper substrate dry slightly before watering again.
The milky sap can irritate skin. If pets chew the leaves or stems, it can also irritate the mouth and stomach. Keep Ficus virens 'Snowstorm' away from pets and small children, wash hands after pruning and avoid touching your eyes after handling cut stems or damaged leaves.
Ficus is the classical Latin name for fig. Virens means green or becoming green, from Latin wording linked with greenness and fresh growth. 'Snowstorm' refers to the pale cream-green variegation across the leaves.
