Wild origins and cultivated form of Ficus microcarpa ‘Compacta’

Ficus microcarpa is native through tropical and subtropical Asia into the western Pacific. In humid tropical habitats it develops into a woody tree and can produce aerial roots from established growth.

‘Compacta’ is the small-leaved, closely branching form grown for a dense crown of small leaves and fine branches.

Keeping Ficus microcarpa ‘Compacta’ dense and healthy

• Light: Give ‘Compacta’ a very bright position and keep the centre open enough for light to reach the inner twigs. Remove crossing growth, then cut long outer shoots back to outward-facing leaf nodes with clean tools.
• Water: Water through the whole pot when the surface is dry and the container feels lighter, while some moisture remains deeper in the mix.
• Potting mix: Use small bark pieces with pumice or perlite for a mix that drains freely and can still be soaked evenly at each watering.
• Temperature and humidity: ‘Compacta’ does well at about 18–27 °C. Ordinary household humidity suits the foliage. Humid conditions can encourage aerial roots.
• Feeding: Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser while new shoots are growing. Pause when fresh growth stops.
• Repotting: Repot when the fine roots pack the container, drainage slows or the mix begins drying out unusually quickly.
• Propagation: Healthy leafy stem cuttings root readily and grow into new ‘Compacta’ plants.

When Ficus microcarpa ‘Compacta’ starts to struggle

• Leaves yellow inside the crown while the outer growth stays green: Check how wet the potting mix is first. If the pot is drying normally, the dense centre may be shaded; remove a few crossing twigs with clean tools and let more light reach the middle.
• Leaves fold or curl loosely along the central vein, with dark thrips or dark scarring inside: Ficus leaf-gall thrips may be feeding there. Isolate the plant, remove badly affected leaves, then use a product labelled for thrips on indoor ornamentals and repeat only at the interval stated on the label.
• Yellowing is accompanied by a sour-smelling mix and soft roots: Root rot is likely. Unpot the plant, remove every soft rotten root back to firm healthy tissue with a clean tool, discard the damaged roots and repot in fresh free-draining mix.
• Sticky residue appears with firm brown bumps among the inner twigs: Scale insects can settle deep in the dense crown. Isolate the plant, clear visible insects from the branches, then use a product labelled for scale on indoor ornamentals and repeat only as the label directs.

• The latex contains ficin and psoralens, which can irritate the mouth, digestive tract, skin and eyes.

Why is it called Ficus microcarpa?

Classical Latin ficus means fig. Microcarpa means ‘small-fruited’.
