Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ is a cream-and-green variegated rubber plant with broad glossy leaves, pale margins and reddish-brown detail through the midrib and leaf stalk. The leaves combine dark green, pale green and cream in irregular patterns, so each leaf has a slightly different mix of colour.
New leaves emerge from protective sheaths at the shoot tips and expand into firm, leathery blades. As the stems thicken, the plant becomes more tree-like. Turning the pot gradually keeps the crown from leaning strongly toward one side, and pruning above a leaf joint encourages branching when the plant gets tall.
‘Tineke’ stays in the cream-and-green range, with reddish-brown details on the midrib and leaf stalk. ‘Belize’ was selected from ‘Tineke’ and shows stronger pink-red colour.
The cream sections have less chlorophyll than the green parts, so they mark faster in harsh sun. Bright filtered light lets new leaves expand cleanly, while harsh sun can brown the cream areas.
In nature, Ficus elastica grows in wet tropical areas from Nepal through western Yunnan into western Malesia. Indoors, ‘Tineke’ stays much smaller and is grown for its variegated leaves rather than flowers or figs.
Damaged leaves and cut stems release white latex. The sap can irritate skin and eyes, and chewing may irritate pets’ mouths or stomachs. Keep the plant away from pets and small children that chew foliage, and wear gloves when pruning.
‘Tineke’ is a cultivar of Ficus elastica Roxb. ex Hornem. The genus name Ficus is linked to figs, and elastica refers to the rubber-like latex.
‘Tineke’ has cream-green variegation with reddish-brown leaf details.
