Ficus elastica ‘Melany’ is the compact rubber plant form, with smaller glossy leaves that sit closer together than on many broad-leaved rubber plant cultivars. The foliage is deep green, often with a bronze tint on new growth, and the close leaf arrangement makes young plants look naturally full.
It keeps smaller leaves, but the stems still gain height and firmness with age. Because the leaves sit close together, young plants stay fuller for longer. Pruning above a leaf joint shortens tall stems before they lose too many lower leaves.
‘Melany’ was selected from Ficus elastica ‘Decora’ in the Netherlands for a more compact habit and smaller leaves.
Indoors, the closer leaf spacing keeps young plants fuller than many large-leaved rubber plants. Enough light is still important; low light stretches the stems and weakens the compact growth.
Like other rubber plants, ‘Melany’ belongs to a species native to Nepal, western Yunnan and western Malesia. In nature, Ficus elastica grows as a wet-tropical tree. Indoors, ‘Melany’ carries the same woody structure into a smaller, fuller plant.
Pot size, light and pruning shape how tall and full it becomes indoors. Bright filtered light keeps new leaves close together instead of stretching along the stems.
Cut stems and damaged leaves release milky latex. It can irritate skin and eyes, and pets may develop mouth or stomach irritation after chewing the plant. Keep it away from pets that chew leaves, use gloves when pruning and wipe sap away before it dries.
‘Melany’ is a cultivar of Ficus elastica Roxb. ex Hornem., a member of the fig family. The name elastica refers to the plant’s milky latex and rubber association.
Smaller leaves and short spacing give ‘Melany’ a fuller crown than many rubber plant cultivars.
