Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' is a cultivated banyan fig with oval to oblong leaves, visible pale veins and upright woody growth. The leaves emerge fresh green and deepen as they mature, while the stems gradually firm up into a small indoor tree. Compared with broader, darker Bengal fig forms, 'Audrey' has paler veins and a lighter, more open branching habit.
Ficus benghalensis comes from the Indian Subcontinent, where the species grows in seasonally dry tropical habitats. Indoors, it needs warmth, thorough watering and a mix that does not stay wet around the roots.
In nature, Ficus benghalensis can become a huge banyan tree with spreading branches and aerial roots that thicken into supporting trunks. Indoors, 'Audrey' remains a container-grown foliage plant. In a home, that banyan habit appears as firm stems, steady branching and a smaller tree-like form.
The pale veins stay visible as the leaves mature, giving 'Audrey' a lighter leaf pattern than darker Bengal fig forms. New growth appears at the shoot tips, and side branches develop from nodes as the plant matures or after pruning. Stronger light keeps the gaps between leaves shorter and the crown more even.
Ficus benghalensis does not make open, showy flowers. Its tiny flowers form inside fig-like structures, a typical feature of the genus. Indoors, 'Audrey' is grown for its leaves and woody stems.
Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' is not pet-safe. The latex can irritate the mouth and stomach if chewed and can irritate skin or eyes during pruning. Keep the plant away from pets and small children, and wash hands and tools after handling cut stems.
Ficus is the classical Latin name for fig. The species name benghalensis refers to Bengal. The common name banyan fig refers to the species’ aerial-rooting tree habit. 'Audrey' is its cultivar name.
With pale veins and oval leaves, 'Audrey' is easy to tell apart from broader, darker Bengal fig forms.
