Fatsia japonica is a woody evergreen shrub with large glossy leaves shaped like open hands. Each leaf sits on a long petiole and opens into a broad palmate blade with deep lobes, so even a young plant already has a strong outline. As it matures, woody stems and a broad crown make it look more like a small shrub than a soft-stemmed foliage plant.
In a pot, Fatsia japonica stays smaller than outdoor garden plants, but it still develops layered growth and a strong stem structure over time. The large leaves need room to spread, and the pot needs enough weight to balance the broad top growth. Indoors, keep it in bright filtered light or gentle partial shade, away from hot radiators, cold draughts and harsh midday sun behind glass.
Fatsia japonica comes from mild, humid East Asian regions, where it grows as an evergreen shrub. Indoors, it tolerates shade better than many glossy-leaved houseplants, but hot dry air and harsh sun behind glass can mark the broad blades.
Cooler household rooms, bright hallways and filtered light are easier for this plant than a hot windowsill. Outdoors, strong cold wind can tear the large leaves. Indoors, sudden draughts and radiator heat are usually the bigger problems.
Fatsia japonica is listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses. Chewing any houseplant can still upset a pet’s stomach, so remove damaged leaves and pruning waste. Keep the plant out of reach if a pet repeatedly bites foliage.
Fatsia japonica was formerly placed in Aralia, which explains the common name Japanese aralia. Fatsia comes from a Latinised Japanese name for the plant, while japonica means “of Japan”.
Fatsia japonica grows broad glossy hand-shaped leaves on woody stems. Bright filtered light, gentle partial shade and distance from radiator heat or cold draughts keep the plant fuller indoors.
