This monstrose, crested form of Echinopsis lageniformis combines two unusual growth patterns in one cactus. Blue-green tissue expands into broad fan-shaped crests, then twists into folds, ridges and irregular knobbly sections. Sparse areoles and short spines dot the surface, while deep valleys create strong shadows between the rising waves.
Small plants start as compact crested pieces, but their growing edge continually changes direction. Over time the fans broaden, branch and bunch into a complex cluster whose height and width depend on the particular growth mutations and how long the plant is allowed to develop. Monstrous rounded sections may appear beside the flatter crest, and occasional ordinary columns can also emerge. Every mature specimen develops its own outline through the slow accumulation of folds, forks and glaucous sculpted tissue.
