Echinocereus pectinatus forms a compact globe to short cylinder covered in comb-like spines. The fine spines lie close against the body in neat sideways rows, interlocking into bands of cream, yellow, pink or brown. This pressed pattern leaves the ribbed green stem visible beneath a remarkably orderly, almost woven surface.
A young plant is usually solitary and rounded. With age, the stem lengthens and may occasionally produce offsets, while the coloured spine bands become more numerous. Mature specimens can carry flowers almost as wide as the cactus itself: brilliant pink to magenta blooms with many glossy petals and a green centre. The contrast between tightly controlled spination and an oversized open flower is the species’ clearest visual signature.
