Everyday care for Echeveria ‘Miranda’

• Managing the clump: As offsets grow around the main rosette, clear away dry leaves and trapped debris so air can move between the rosettes.
• Watering: Let the mix beneath the centre of the clump dry well between waterings. Water thoroughly once the pot feels light.
• Light: Very bright conditions keep the individual rosettes compact and help the tips turn pink to red. Introduce direct sun gradually after a move from lower light.
• Mix and drainage: Use an airy succulent mix that stays loose even as several rosettes share the pot. Make sure water can still drain freely as the clump fills the pot.
• Feeding and flower stalks: Give ‘Miranda’ a light feed with a complete fertiliser while the clump is making leaves, offsets or flowers. Cut back feeding once growth slows, and remove spent flower stalks after flowering.
• Repotting and division: Repot once the roots crowd the pot or the clump presses against the rim. Rooted offsets can be divided and potted separately.
• Temperature: Normal indoor temperatures suit ‘Miranda’. Keep it frost-free and give the pot more time to dry in cool or humid conditions.

Common issues with Echeveria ‘Miranda’

• Pink tips fade while the centre grows more open: The rosette needs stronger light. Move it towards brighter conditions in stages. As the plant recovers, the centre should become tighter and the tips should regain their pink-red colour.
• The centre turns dark, wet or soft: Water trapped in the crown can lead to crown rot. Remove loose damaged leaves and use a clean tool to cut soft tissue back to firm healthy growth. Discard the removed tissue and keep the centre dry while the cut closes.
• Small blisters become rough, corky scars on otherwise firm leaves: Oedema is likely after the plant takes up a lot of water in cool, humid conditions. Let the pot dry properly and improve air movement before the next watering.
• Lower leaves soften while the whole pot stays heavy: Inspect the roots and lower stem. With a clean tool, remove all soft dark tissue until only firm, healthy tissue remains. Discard the removed tissue and let the clean cuts dry. Once the cuts are dry, repot the healthy portion if firm, healthy roots remain. Let a healthy rootless top form new roots in fresh dry mix.
• Mealybugs hide where several rosettes meet: Check between the rosettes, along the lower stems and around the roots. After removing visible insects, use a mealybug product labelled for ornamental plants and follow the label for repeat treatment.

Echeveria commemorates Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy. The epithet agavoides means Agave-like.

Augustin Pyramus de Candolle established the genus Echeveria in 1828 in Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis, volume 3, page 401.

Charles Lemaire first described Echeveria agavoides in 1863 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 10, issue Misc., page 78.
