Dracaena zeylanica ‘Fan’ background and naming

‘Fan’ is a nursery name used for a plant sold in the zeylanica group. Dracaena zeylanica is native to Sri Lanka and southern India, while “zeylanica” is also used for other cultivated snake plants. This explains why older nursery labels can differ. The species was once called Sansevieria zeylanica; since 2017 it has been known as Dracaena zeylanica, following genetic studies that placed Sansevieria inside Dracaena.

Caring for Dracaena zeylanica ‘Fan’

• Light: Keep it in bright indirect light for steady growth.
• Temperature and humidity: Indoor temperatures around 15–24 °C suit it well. Ordinary room humidity is fine; avoid still, damp air around the foliage.
• Water: Let the potting mix dry well before watering again. When the container feels light, soak the mix evenly and leave the pot to drain.
• Potting mix: Plant it in a loose cactus or succulent mix that drains quickly, using a pot with drainage holes.
• Repotting: Choose the next pot size when roots become crowded or fresh shoots are pressed against the rim.
• Feeding: Feed lightly about once a month while fresh leaves or shoots are developing.
• Propagation: Separate established offsets, keeping roots and a piece of rhizome attached, to preserve the ‘Fan’ form.
• Safety: Place it where pets and children cannot nibble the foliage. The plant can be harmful if swallowed; sap may irritate sensitive skin.

Common issues with Dracaena zeylanica ‘Fan’

• New leaves become longer and lean outward: This can happen when the plant is kept in too little light. Move it gradually into brighter indirect light.
• The base becomes soft or yellow: Wet roots or rhizomes may have started to rot. With a disinfected cutting tool, cut away all soft tissue until only firm healthy tissue remains, discard the rotten pieces and repot the healthy section into fresh, fast-draining mix.
• Leaves crease or wrinkle: Creasing can appear when the plant has become too dry. Check whether the mix is dry through the pot; if it is, water deeply and let the container drain.
• Dry tan patches appear: Strong sun introduced too quickly may have burned the leaves. Protect the plant from the hottest midday sun and increase direct light more slowly.
• Pale speckles, fine webbing or cottony insects appear: Spider mites or mealybugs may be present. Isolate the plant, remove visible pests and treat with a houseplant product that names the pest on the label. Repeat at the stated interval.

Why is Sansevieria zeylanica now called Dracaena zeylanica?

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. The epithet zeylanica means “from Ceylon”, the historical name for Sri Lanka.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Aloe hyacinthoides var. zeylanica in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 321. David Mabberley later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena zeylanica in 2017 in Mabberley’s Plant-book, edition 4, page 1101.

Sansevieria remains common in horticulture. Pei-Luen Lu and Clifford Morden showed that it belongs within Dracaena in a 2014 DNA study in Systematic Botany, volume 39. Kew’s World Checklist treats Sansevieria zeylanica as a synonym of Dracaena zeylanica.
