Dracaena trifasciata ‘Golden Diamond’ native range and Sansevieria name change

The wild species comes from southern Nigeria, parts of west-central Africa and Tanzania. It grows in tropical areas with a dry season and stores water in its fleshy leaves.

You may know the species by its older name, Sansevieria trifasciata. In 2017, it became Dracaena trifasciata after DNA studies showed that Sansevieria belongs within Dracaena.

Growing Dracaena trifasciata ‘Golden Diamond’ indoors

• Light: Give bright, indirect or filtered light. Light shade is also fine.
• Water: Use the weight of the pot and a fully dry mix as your cue. Water thoroughly, let excess run out and leave the pot to dry before the next watering.
• Potting mix: Plant it in a coarse succulent mix and make sure the container has drainage holes.
• Temperature: Keep the plant around 15–24°C and away from cold draughts.
• Humidity: Normal room humidity is fine. Keep the leaves dry and allow air to move freely around the plant.
• Repotting: Wait until several fans fill the pot or roots press firmly against the sides, then move up one pot size.
• Feeding: Feed lightly each month while fresh leaves or side fans are developing.
• When growth slows: Cooler, darker conditions keep the mix moist for longer, so extend the time between waterings.
• Propagation: Separate a rooted side fan from the clump when you want another plant.
• Handling: Wear gloves during trimming or division to avoid sap on the skin. Keep the plant away from children and pets because chewing the leaves can cause stomach upset.

Dracaena trifasciata ‘Golden Diamond’ troubleshooting and solutions

• Soft base or unstable fan: A soft or unstable base can be a sign of rot. Check the base and roots, then clean and disinfect a blade before cutting away damaged tissue until the base is firm and healthy. Discard the rotten material and repot the healthy section in fresh, free-draining mix.
• Leaves become wrinkled: If the mix is fully dry and the roots remain firm, the plant needs water. Water deeply and let the pot drain fully.
• Dry bleached areas: Strong direct sun can bleach or scorch the leaves. Move the plant away from direct sun and keep it in bright filtered light.
• New growth is narrow or weak: Narrow or weak new growth can develop in low light, and weak roots can make the problem worse. Move the plant gradually into brighter filtered light and check for firm roots and fresh root growth.
• Pale speckling, webbing or cottony deposits: Check for spider mites and mealybugs and isolate the plant. If treatment is needed, use a product labelled for the pest and follow the label directions. Repeat the treatment only if the label tells you to.

Sansevieria trifasciata and Dracaena trifasciata: why did the name change?

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. The epithet trifasciata means three-banded.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

David Prain first described it as Sansevieria trifasciata in 1903 in Bengal Plants, volume 2, page 1054. David Mabberley later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena trifasciata in 2017 in Mabberley’s Plant-book, edition 4, page 1101.

Sansevieria remains common in horticulture. Pei-Luen Lu and Clifford Morden showed that it belongs within Dracaena in a 2014 DNA study in Systematic Botany, volume 39. Kew’s World Checklist treats Sansevieria trifasciata as a synonym of Dracaena trifasciata.
