Dracaena trifasciata ‘Black Diamond’ natural range and Dracaena name change

In the wild, Dracaena trifasciata grows from southern Nigeria through parts of west-central Africa and also in Tanzania. It comes from tropical areas with a dry season, and its thick leaves store water through dry periods.

Older labels may use Sansevieria trifasciata. DNA studies showed that Sansevieria is part of Dracaena, and the name changed to Dracaena trifasciata in 2017.

• Potting mix: Use a coarse, free-draining succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes.
• Water: Wait until the potting mix is dry through before watering again. Soak the mix evenly and drain the pot.
• Light: Give bright filtered light. Light shade also works for ‘Black Diamond’.
• Humidity: Normal room humidity is fine. Let the leaves dry after wiping or cleaning them.
• Temperature: Keep ‘Black Diamond’ around 15–24°C and away from cold draughts.
• Feeding: Use a light feed roughly monthly while fresh growth is appearing.
• Slower growth: When indoor light and temperature fall, the pot stays moist for longer, so water less often.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the container or new side growth begins to push against the pot.
• Propagation: Separate a rooted side shoot to keep the same leaf pattern.
• Handling: Sap may irritate skin during cutting or division. Gloves are useful, and the leaves should stay out of reach of children and pets because eating them can cause stomach upset.

• Soft tissue where a leaf meets the potting mix: Softness at the leaf base is a common sign of rot. Check the base and roots. Clean and disinfect a knife before cutting, then remove every damaged area until the remaining tissue is firm and healthy. Discard the rotten pieces and repot the healthy section in fresh, free-draining mix.
• Wrinkled or folded leaves: If the roots are firm and the potting mix is fully dry, the plant needs water. Water thoroughly and let the pot drain completely.
• The fine yellow edge turns dry or papery: Strong direct sun can scorch the fine yellow edge. Move the plant away from direct sun and keep it in bright filtered light.
• Weak or leaning new growth: New growth can lean when light is too low or the roots are too weak to hold the plant firmly. Move the plant gradually to brighter filtered light and check that the roots are firm and producing fresh growth.
• Fine webbing or cottony clusters: Check for spider mites and mealybugs, then isolate the plant. If treatment is needed, use a product labelled for the pest and repeat it only as directed on the label.

Why is Sansevieria trifasciata now called Dracaena trifasciata?

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. The epithet trifasciata means three-banded.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

David Prain first described it as Sansevieria trifasciata in 1903 in Bengal Plants, volume 2, page 1054. David Mabberley later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena trifasciata in 2017 in Mabberley’s Plant-book, edition 4, page 1101.

Sansevieria remains common in horticulture. Pei-Luen Lu and Clifford Morden showed that it belongs within Dracaena in a 2014 DNA study in Systematic Botany, volume 39. Kew’s World Checklist treats Sansevieria trifasciata as a synonym of Dracaena trifasciata.
