Dracaena hanningtonii ‘Samurai’ origin and former name

Dracaena hanningtonii is native across north-eastern and eastern tropical Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, where it grows in dry bushland, wooded grassland, rocky ground and low limestone hills. The name Dracaena hanningtonii was published in 1898, although ‘Samurai’ was long sold as Sansevieria ehrenbergii ‘Samurai’. Today, Sansevieria ehrenbergii is treated as a synonym of Dracaena hanningtonii. DNA studies later confirmed that Sansevieria belongs within Dracaena, supporting this treatment. Some older labels also use Dracaena perrotii because Sansevieria ehrenbergii was once used for two different species.

Dracaena hanningtonii ‘Samurai’ care at home

• Light: Bright indirect light helps it keep its compact shape.
• Water: Wait until the mix has dried well before watering again. Water thoroughly, then let the container drain completely.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm indoor conditions around 15–24 °C are suitable. Low to normal household humidity works well, with airflow around the plant.
• Potting mix: Use a coarse succulent blend and a pot with drainage holes so excess water can leave quickly.
• Repotting: Move it to a slightly larger pot once roots and rhizomes crowd the current container.
• Feeding: Feed sparingly about once a month during active growth.
• Propagation: Divide established offsets with attached rhizomes to continue the compact ‘Samurai’ form.
• Safety: Keep it where pets and children cannot chew the foliage. The plant may be harmful if eaten, and sap can irritate skin.

Dracaena hanningtonii ‘Samurai’ troubleshooting

• New leaves become unusually long or loose: A position that is too dark can loosen the compact growth. Move the plant into stronger filtered light and increase the brightness gradually.
• The base softens or yellows: Check for root or rhizome rot if the mix has stayed wet. Disinfect the cutting tool, then remove rot until only firm, healthy tissue remains. Throw away everything soft and repot the healthy section in fresh, free-draining mix.
• Leaves wrinkle or lose firmness: Loss of firmness often means the plant has become too dry. If the mix has dried through, water deeply and let the pot drain completely.
• Fine webbing develops or cottony insects become visible: Look for spider mites or mealybugs. Keep the affected plant separate and use a houseplant product labelled for the pest. Repeat treatment as the label directs.
• Dry bleached patches appear: Intense midday sun may be scorching the leaves. Protect the plant from the strongest sun and increase direct light in smaller steps.

How did the name change from Sansevieria perrotii to Dracaena perrotii?

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. The epithet perrotii honours the French pharmacist and botanist Émile Perrot.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

Otto Warburg first described it as Sansevieria perrotii in 1901 in Tropenpflanzer, volume 5, page 191. James W. Byng and Maarten J. M. Christenhusz later placed it in Dracaena as Dracaena perrotii in 2018 in Global Flora, volume 4, page 66.

Sansevieria remains common in horticulture. Pei-Luen Lu and Clifford Morden showed that it belongs within Dracaena in a 2014 DNA study in Systematic Botany, volume 39. Kew’s World Checklist treats Sansevieria perrotii as a synonym of Dracaena perrotii.
