Dracaena (Sansevieria) perrotii 'Samurai' is a compact and highly ornamental cultivar of Dracaena perrotii (O. Warburg) Byng and Christenh. Unlike the familiar upright snake plants, this form grows in neat, opposite pairs of short, boat-shaped leaves stacked into tight rosettes. The foliage is thick, glaucous green, and edged with a fine white to reddish line, giving it a sculptural, geometric quality. Small in stature but striking in form, it has become a must-have for collectors of unusual Dracaena cultivars.
Native to Africa, Dracaena perrotii belongs to the same group as the classic trifasciata snake plants but differs sharply in growth habit. Once classified under Sansevieria, it was merged into Dracaena following molecular studies. The ‘Samurai’ form highlights this species’ unique leaf geometry, offering an alternative to the tall, blade-like look of more common snake plant types.
Dracaena 'Samurai' is prized because it doesn’t look like a typical snake plant. Its compact, layered rosettes give it a bonsai-like character, perfect for small displays or curated plant collections. For enthusiasts, it offers rarity, architectural beauty, and the same toughness that makes snake plants famous.
The genus name Dracaena comes from the Ancient Greek δράκαινα (drakaina), meaning “female dragon,” referring to the red resin (“dragon’s blood”) produced by some species. The epithet perrotii honors French botanist Georges Perrot, noted for his work on African flora.
If you want a snake plant that combines sculptural form with easy care, Dracaena perrotii 'Samurai' is an excellent choice. Compact, geometric, and resilient, it brings a unique architectural accent to any plant collection. Order today and enjoy this rare cultivar in your home or workspace.
