Dracaena reflexa ‘Song of Jamaica’: origin and houseplant history

Dracaena reflexa grows naturally in north-eastern Mozambique and on western Indian Ocean islands including Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles. Wild plants grow as woody shrubs or small trees.

‘Song of Jamaica’ was already in cultivation when a natural branch mutation was found in Costa Rica in 2001 and later named ‘Song of Costa Rica’.

Everyday care for Dracaena reflexa ‘Song of Jamaica’

• Light: set it in bright filtered light so the leafy heads stay compact and the yellow-green centres remain distinct. Protect the leaves from strong midday sun through glass.
• Temperature: aim for 18–24°C and keep the plant above 15°C.
• Watering: water when the top of the mix has started to dry. Water the mix thoroughly and let the excess drain from the pot.
• Humidity: moderate humidity helps the dense leaf clusters and new leaves stay in good condition.
• Water quality: if your water is hard or fluoridated, the leaf tips may brown. Use rainwater or distilled water. Filtered water can also work when it contains only small amounts of dissolved minerals.
• Potting mix: use an airy houseplant mix that holds moisture evenly and drains freely.
• Feeding: feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser while the plant is making new leaves.
• Slower growth: once new leaves are developing more slowly, allow the upper mix to dry further between waterings and space out feeding.
• Repotting, pruning and propagation: repot once the roots are tight in the pot or the tall stems need more stability. Cutting a stem can encourage new shoots below the cut, and healthy stem sections can form roots in warm conditions.

Troubleshooting Dracaena reflexa ‘Song of Jamaica’

• Dry brown leaf ends: hard or fluoridated water, too much fertiliser or uneven watering can brown the tips. If tap water is hard or fluoridated, switch to rainwater, distilled water or low-mineral filtered water. Reduce feeding and keep the watering pattern steady.
• Bleached or papery areas through the yellow-green centres: strong direct light can scorch the leaves. Keep the plant in bright filtered light and shield it from the hottest midday sun.
• Several leaves yellowing in a heavy, damp pot: the mix may be staying wet long enough to leave too little air around the roots. Let the pot dry further and empty standing water from the outer pot. Dark, soft roots suggest root rot. Use disinfected scissors to remove each affected section and stop once the remaining roots are firm and healthy. Discard the rotten pieces and repot in fresh loose mix.
• Fine webbing, silver feeding marks, raised brown scales or cottony clusters: check the leaf clusters for thrips, mealybugs, spider mites or scale. Isolate it from nearby houseplants while treatment is underway. Choose a houseplant treatment that names the pest you found. The label tells you how much to use and when the treatment can be repeated.

How the name Dracaena reflexa came about

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. The epithet reflexa is Latin for bent or turned backwards, referring to the recurved leaves.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck first described Dracaena reflexa in 1786 in Encyclopédie, volume 2, page 324.
