The name Dracaena braunii still appears on some labels and listings for plants in this group, although current botanical treatments recognise it as a species separate from Dracaena sanderiana. 'Victory' belongs to Dracaena sanderiana, which comes from humid tropical habitats in western Central Africa and north-eastern Angola.

Indoor care for Dracaena sanderiana 'Victory'

• Light and variegation: Bright, indirect daylight supports clear variegation. Protect the pale leaf tissue from abrupt exposure to intense midday sun through glass.
• Support: Longer canes may lean as they approach 60–90 cm. Use a slim stake when a stem no longer holds itself upright.
• Water: Check the potting mix before watering and wait until the surface has begun to dry. Water the root ball evenly, then let the container drain. Give the mix longer between waterings if dimmer or cooler conditions reduce the plant’s water use.
• Humidity: Moderate household humidity suits 'Victory'. Keep it away from radiators and hot, drying airflow that can crisp the pale parts of the leaves.
• Temperature: Keep the plant comfortably warm and away from cold draughts or chilled window areas.
• Potting mix: Choose an airy houseplant mix that keeps some moisture around the roots while allowing excess water to drain freely.

• Curled leaves or dry tan and brown patches, especially in the pale stripes: Sudden strong sun or heat through glass can scorch the variegated foliage. Move 'Victory' away from the hottest exposure and filter intense direct light.
• Wilting with soft brown tissue at the cane base: Rot may be affecting the roots or lower stem. Unpot the plant and use a clean, disinfected tool to remove every soft or dark section, cutting back to firm tissue. Discard all rotten material and repot the healthy remainder in fresh mix with good drainage.
• Crisp brown tips: Dry air, fluoride or mineral build-up can affect the leaf ends. Keep the plant clear of radiators and hot airflow, and use rainwater or filtered water. Run a generous amount of clean water through the root ball to wash out accumulated salts, then allow it to drain completely.
• Sticky residue, cottony material, fine webbing or hard bumps: Inspect the nodes, leaf bases and undersides for scale, mealybugs or spider mites. Isolate the plant and choose a treatment labelled for the pest you find. Apply it exactly as directed, including any repeat interval stated on the label.

About the name Dracaena braunii

Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning a female dragon. Braunii honours Johannes M. Braun (1859–1893), whose collected material formed the basis of the species name.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Dracaena in 1767 in Mantissa Plantarum, page 9; Domenico Vandelli had proposed the name.
