The Geri D22 plant

Geri D22 is an unidentified Dischidia circulated under the code D22. Apple Leaf describes its rounded foliage.

Dischidia are mainly tree-growing climbers from tropical and subtropical Asia into the western Pacific. Their stems root where they meet bark, moss or trapped organic debris, and those exposed roots receive moisture followed by rapid drainage and fresh air.

Light

Give this broad-leaved Dischidia strong filtered daylight near an east window or screened from the hottest hours at a south or west exposure. Its fleshy leaves can use a little gentle morning sun after acclimation, but fierce rays through glass may bleach or scorch exposed surfaces. Weak light creates wider internodes and smaller, thinner leaves. Use firm new growth and close leaf spacing to fine-tune the position.

Watering

Let most of the open substrate dry, then wet the full root ball and drain it. The thick apple-like leaves buffer a short dry period, but they should not be used as a reason to leave fine roots dry for weeks; wrinkling signals that the interval went too far. Constant wetness remains the greater risk. Check pot weight below the leafy crown. Warm bright air and a shallow root-filled pot speed drying; cool shade, deep plastic and degraded mix delay it.

Substrate and roots

Use an airy epiphytic blend of fine bark or coco chips, perlite or pumice and a modest coir-based moisture component. It should re-wet evenly and drain rapidly around the fine roots. Avoid garden soil, compact peat and a pot much larger than the established root system. Keep the crown at the surface and maintain clear holes. Low-mineral water and occasional flushing reduce salt stress in the small root zone.

Temperature

Warm indoor conditions of 20–28 °C are appropriate, with a cautious minimum around 16 °C. Do not expose a recently watered plant to cold glass, winter ventilation or air-conditioning. Thick leaves can remain firm after roots have chilled, so use root-zone temperature as the guide. Direct heater air may wrinkle only the outer foliage and can conceal a still-moist pot.

Humidity and airflow

Average room humidity is workable for the fleshy foliage. Moderate humidity may improve new-leaf expansion and aerial rooting, paired with free air movement around stems and substrate. Keep the plant in an open display and away from a closed vessel. Routine misting adds little dependable moisture and can leave water sitting at the crown.

Fertilising

Apply a complete fertiliser at one-quarter strength every four to six weeks when new stems and leaves are forming. Use less in fresh enriched substrate. Continue a light dose through winter only if the plant stays warm, bright and active. Pause as growth and water use slow. Avoid experimental heavy feeding; fine epiphytic roots and a small substrate volume are vulnerable to salts. Flush periodically with plain low-mineral water.

Repotting

Repot when roots occupy the container densely, the medium breaks down, moisture becomes difficult to judge or the leafy mass needs greater stability. A slightly snug shallow pot is appropriate. Increase width by 2–3 cm, retain the sound root-bound core and remove only loose degraded material. Restore the old planting level during warm active growth. A stable cover pot can correct top-heaviness without unnecessary root-space expansion.

Growth, pruning and leaf care

Let the stems hang or guide them loosely around a hoop, according to the current growth direction. Rotate gradually so the broad leaf faces receive balanced light. Tip-prune a sparse or overlong stem above a node, retaining most active growth until the plant’s response is known. Handle by supporting the stem and leaf from below; thick blades can crease at the petiole. Rinse gently and drain the crown, avoiding leaf-shine products and repeated rubbing.

• Compact stems carry rounded glossy leaves: The apple-like outline is normal for Geri D22 and becomes fuller as each blade matures.
• Firm leaves drop after relocation: Sudden cold, a new light level or an over-dry root ball can trigger shedding. Restore stable warmth and filtered light, then check the mix first and water only if it has dried sufficiently.
• Lower stems darken and the pot smells stale: The roots have probably remained wet too long. Cut away soft tissue, use a small pot and loose medium, and follow our root-rot guide if decay has reached the roots.
• Brown bumps or cottony tufts gather at the nodes: Scale and mealybugs both favour sheltered stem joints. Isolate the plant, identify whether the pest is shell-like or fluffy, and repeat the appropriate treatment.

What the name means

Robert Brown established Dischidia in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae in 1810. The name combines Greek words for “twice” and “split,” referring to the divided lobes of the staminal corona.

“Sp.” shows that the species is unidentified. “Geri D22” is used as a nursery accession code, and Apple Leaf is an informal horticultural name for the rounded foliage.
