Dioscorea amaranthoides, sold in horticulture as var. metallica, is a climbing yam grown for elongated leaves with a coppery bronze to metallic olive surface. The blades are slim and pointed, with fine veins that catch the light across the darker colour. Fresh leaves may carry warmer red-brown tones before settling into their deeper metallic finish.
This is a tuberous vine, producing thin flexible growth that can travel quickly once established. Young plants begin with smaller, softer leaves and a modest underground storage organ. Later vines carry longer blades and make the bronze sheen more continuous along the climbing growth. The combination of narrow proportions and burnished colour gives it a markedly different look from the broad, patterned leaves of Dioscorea dodecaneura.
