Cyanastrum cordifolium produces glossy heart-shaped leaves from a chain of small underground corms. The deep-green blades are softly pleated by sunken veins and drawn to a neat point. Their glossy surfaces form a low layer of green above the substrate.
The plant usually remains below 30 cm, increasing through new corms that develop above the older ones and gradually add more leaves. Flowering brings a very different form: short stalks carry loose clusters of blue to violet star-shaped blooms above the polished green blades. Pale bluish-green bracts remain beneath the flowers. Broad leaves remain close to the substrate, blue flowers rise above them and a chain of ring-scarred corms extends below.
