The elongated leaves of Curio herreanus ‘Purple Flush’ make it easy to tell apart from round string-of-pearls types. Its slender stems carry green, bead-like leaves with a purple flush and darker lengthwise markings, most visible in bright light.
The stems trail from the pot or creep across the substrate, rooting where nodes touch the surface. In lower light, they usually lengthen and the leaves often look greener.
Curio herreanus is native to Namibia, where it grows in dry shrubland and desert habitats. Its thick leaves and slender stems suit bright light, quick drainage and dry periods between waterings.
Each leaf has a faint translucent line. The leaves store water, so the mix should dry between waterings. The slender stems trail or creep and can root where stem joints touch the mix. Older plants can produce small white flowerheads when light is strong enough.
Keep Curio herreanus ‘Purple Flush’ out of reach of pets and children. Avoid ingestion. Sap from damaged stems may irritate sensitive skin.
Curio herreanus was previously known as Senecio herreanus. The name herreanus honours Hans Herre, and ‘Purple Flush’ is a horticultural name for the purple-toned form.
Let the pot dry out between waterings so the thick leaves stay firm.
