The botanical names used for ‘Golden Mosaic’

‘Golden Mosaic’ has been sold as Ctenanthe pilosa, C. lubbersiana and C. marantifolia. Ctenanthe pilosa is a synonym of C. marantifolia, while the cultivar’s exact species remains uncertain.

In horticulture it is known simply as Ctenanthe ‘Golden Mosaic’. Upright leafy stems rise from spreading rhizomes and carry its bright green-and-yellow pattern.

Root-stress yellowing is more uniform, often affects whole leaves and is accompanied by loss of firmness. Compare with older healthy blades and inspect the wetness and roots before removing naturally patterned foliage.

New leaves carry much less golden pattern

The balance of green and gold varies from leaf to leaf, and low light can make the markings less distinct while producing softer stems. Give brighter indirect light gradually and wait for several leaves to mature before deciding that the pattern has changed. More fertiliser will not paint existing leaves gold, so wait for several well-formed replacements before pruning.

The leafy stems become long and flop outward

‘Golden Mosaic’ develops upright, cane-like stems. Unusually weak, elongated stems indicate insufficient light or one-sided growth. Improve light, rotate the pot and support the clump temporarily. Divide or prune only healthy rhizomes after compact shoots resume; a soft base requires a rot check.

The paler mosaic tissue makes damage obvious, but the usual triggers are uneven root moisture, excess salts, direct sun or cold draughts. Check the pot before watering, flush residue and reposition as needed. Isolate the plant if the brown area is soft, spotted or still enlarging after those stresses are removed.

When was Ctenanthe lubbersiana first published, and what does it mean?

Ctenanthe combines Greek kteis, meaning comb, with anthos, meaning flower. The epithet lubbersiana honours Belgian horticulturist Louis Lubbers.

August Wilhelm Eichler established the genus Ctenanthe in 1884 in Abhandlungen der Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, volume 1884, page 81.

Charles Jacques Édouard Morren first described it as Stromanthe lubbersiana in 1882 in Annales de Botanique et d’Horticulture, volume 32, page 21. Otto Georg Petersen later placed it in Ctenanthe as Ctenanthe lubbersiana in 1890 in Flora Brasiliensis, volume 3, issue 3, page 159; August Wilhelm Eichler had proposed the name.
