Ctenanthe ‘Amagris’

A Belgian whole-plant mutation selected in 2000

René Denis discovered ‘Amagris’ in June 2000 in Beervelde-Lochristi, Belgium. It appeared as a naturally occurring whole-plant mutation within a cultivated parent selection known as burle-marxii.

The selected plant was reproduced by tissue culture, preserving its compact growth, narrow leaves and fine silver-green pattern through successive cultivated plants in commercial production. Short spacing between the leaves helps maintain the dense upright habit.

Removing damaged leaves from tight shoots

No support is required for the low, fine-textured clump. Wait until the newest leaf of the plant has firmed before making small changes to the pot's orientation.

Watering fine roots beneath silver-grey leaves

Check the root zone a few centimetres below the surface and water before the shallow rhizome zone dries hard. Wet the entire root ball and empty the cover pot.

Light

Keep Ctenanthe ‘Amagris’ directly by an east-facing window or in strong filtered daylight from a brighter exposure. A position is too dark when the compact clump loosens, leaf stalks lengthen and grey markings look flatter.

Winter positioning

In winter, keep the plant off cold glass and stone sills, and outside direct heating or cooling currents.

Feeding

Feed Ctenanthe ‘Amagris’ with a complete fertiliser at a low dose while it is producing firm new growth. Use a little more only for a vigorous plant in strong light, and less after repotting or when the pot starts drying more slowly.

Repotting, watering and root care

Ctenanthe ‘Amagris’ needs fresh space once roots pack the base, rhizomes crowd the sides, watering becomes very frequent or the mix stays dense in the centre. Choose a shallow broad pot only slightly wider.

Pattern and growth problems in Ctenanthe ‘Amagris’

The dark curved marks are mistaken for leaf spot

Regular dark arcs repeated across the pale silver-green blade are the normal ‘Amagris’ pattern. Disease or injury is more likely when a mark crosses that geometry, develops a yellow halo, feels wet or enlarges. Keep a suspect leaf dry and isolate the plant if irregular lesions continue to spread.

The narrow leaves roll into tubes

‘Amagris’ rolls its small leaves tightly when the root ball is too dry, the air is hot or roots have been injured. Check below the surface: rehydrate a dry plant evenly, but inspect roots if the pot remains wet. Consistent warmth and moisture should produce flatter new leaves; forcing old ones open causes splits.

The compact silver clump sends out tiny, widely spaced leaves

Low light can weaken and open the normally close clump, while a congested or damaged root system can also reduce leaf size. Check root health, then move a sound plant to brighter indirect light. Avoid heavy feeding until normal leaf size returns, as unhealthy roots cannot use it safely.

Pale leaves acquire dry rusty margins

Fine brown edging usually follows a missed watering, concentrated feed, cold air or direct sun on the delicate silver tissue. Match the fix to the cause and keep the mix evenly moist with reliable drainage. If brown areas begin as separate wet spots within the blade, use leaf-spot precautions.

Ctenanthe combines Greek kteis, meaning comb, with anthos, meaning flower.
