Tubular leaves are the first thing you notice on Crassula ovata 'Horn Tree'. They curve and flare at the tips, giving the plant its horn-like look. In bright light, the thick stems branch slowly and become woody-looking over time.
Crassula ovata comes from south-eastern Mozambique to the south-eastern Cape Province, where it grows as a succulent shrub. It belongs to the jade plant species. Let the pot dry well between waterings, and give the plant enough light to keep the tubular leaves firm.
Crassula ovata sits in Crassulaceae, the stonecrop family. Standard jade plants have broader, oval leaves; 'Horn Tree' has tubular leaves. The thick stems and water-storing leaves are still typical of jade plants.
The plant stores water in both leaves and stems, so the roots need air as much as moisture. Keep it in a bright spot and a gritty mix so the stems stay sturdy. In low light or wet soil, stems can stretch and leaves can soften.
Crassula ovata is harmful to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep Crassula ovata 'Horn Tree' out of reach of pets and small children. Wash hands after pruning or handling broken stems if your skin is sensitive.
Crassula comes from Latin crassus, meaning thick, referring to the fleshy leaves and stems. Ovata means egg-shaped, describing the typical leaf shape of the species.
