Cordyline fruticosa ‘Tango’

A streaked ti cultivar from a rain-rich tropical lineage

Magenta, burgundy and rose-pink streaks cross the deep green leaves of ‘Tango’. This colouring was selected in cultivation, while the broad leaves retain the upright crowns typical of Cordyline fruticosa.

Although ti plants now occur across much of tropical Oceania through a long history of cultivation, their wild ancestry is centred in Papuasia and the western Pacific. Natural forms grow in humid forest openings, margins and thickets where rainfall is frequent. Light shifts between bright and shaded patches as it passes through taller leaves around the canes.

Indoor care for Cordyline fruticosa ‘Tango’

Light for cerise-edged leaves

Position ‘Tango’ beside an east-facing window or within the brightest part of a room with direct midday sun screened. Strong, even daylight keeps the coloured crown dense from several angles. Give the leaves strong filtered daylight from more than one side and introduce any morning sun gradually. Hot afternoon sun through glass can scorch the leaf facing the pane. When the room is too dim, the cane leans, leaf spacing increases and the colour loses clarity. Light and gradual rotation influence the direction of growth, but they do not create the plant's colour.

Checking the root ball before watering

Check ‘Tango’ in several places because multiple shoots may not dry the pot evenly. Once the upper 2–4 cm is dry and the container feels lighter, soak the whole root ball and remove standing water. Warm sunlit leaves, a small pot and active growth shorten the interval; a cool shaded root zone or a recent move to a larger pot prolongs it. Do not let one side shrink dry or the lower mix remain waterlogged around a leaning cane.

An airy mix for healthy cane growth

Keep the mix around ‘Tango’ loose even if a young cane needs temporary support. A quality houseplant substrate or coir, mixed with fine bark and pumice or perlite, provides both moisture and drainage. Keep a leaning cane at its former planting depth; burying it deeper can hold stagnant moisture against the base. Correct a lean with better light and a soft tie. Keep the substrate loose and rinse the pot before salts collect around the fine roots.

Avoiding chills while coloured leaves open

‘Tango’ grows most evenly at 19–28 °C. Do not allow the root ball to chill below about 16 °C or remain for long under 15 °C. A leaning cane beside cold glass can be damaged on one side, and rapid changes from ventilation or heating may distort an opening leaf.

Air movement among glossy raspberry leaves

Humidity around 50–70% supports smooth development of new coloured leaves; a cabinet is unnecessary. Keep space between the leaves so room air can move around them, and keep the plant away from a wall. If the room is dry, use a humidifier; repeated spraying can leave marks and wet pockets without solving the problem.

Feeding colour without tip burn

Apply a balanced foliage fertiliser to moist substrate while ‘Tango’ is growing. One-quarter to one-half strength at intervals of about one to one and a half months is adequate. Concentrated feeding cannot correct a faded crown caused by weak light and may brown the tips. Use less when the plant is newly potted, kept cooler or receiving moderate light. Continue a light winter dose only while new leaves are forming, and rinse the mix thoroughly from time to time.

Straightening ‘Tango’ without planting it deeper

Give ‘Tango’ fresh space once roots pack several drainage holes, different parts of the pot dry at different rates or the centre remains wet. A pot 2–4 cm wider is enough. Support any leaning cane while moving the root ball, preserve healthy connected roots and return the plant to its original depth. Divide only naturally separate rooted growth during a warm active period.

Guiding a young cane as the crown widens

Guide a young leaning cane with a loose soft tie only until the roots anchor it. Prune a bare cane above a node if height control is needed. Adjust the orientation of ‘Tango’ only after each new leaf firms, and remove a temporary tie once the roots hold the cane.

Cut spent lower leaves cleanly and do not peel resistant sheaths. Support each angled leaf while cleaning it, using plain water and no shine products.

Fine pale dots, a dusty cast and webbing beneath the narrow glossy leaves can indicate spider mites; plain dust wipes off. Isolate the plant, confirm moving mites with a lens and use a suitable houseplant treatment, covering the undersides. Continue checks on newly opened leaves because dark ‘Tango’ foliage can hide early colonies.

The narrow blades twist or roll tightly

Some arch is normal, but persistent tight rolling usually follows a dry root ball, cold air or root damage. Feel the mix below the surface: water thoroughly if dry, or inspect roots if it remains wet. Avoid trying to flatten the blade; judge recovery by the shape of new growth.

Dark marks are difficult to distinguish from burgundy pigment

Healthy colour is glossy, firm and repeated predictably along the leaf. Damage is more likely if a mark turns dull, translucent, soft or larger. Keep suspect foliage dry, mark the boundary and remove an enlarging leaf. Blackening where a new leaf joins the cane requires a faster crown check.

Slow loss of the oldest leaves is normal for a cane-forming ti plant. Keep the firm bare cane or cut it back during active growth if a shorter plant is wanted. Rapid leaf loss with a wrinkled cane points to severe dehydration; a soft cane points to decay and should be cut to clean tissue.

Pet safety for Cordyline fruticosa ‘Tango’

Cordyline fruticosa ‘Tango’ should not be chewed by cats or dogs because it contains toxic saponins. Vomiting, heavy salivation, refusal of food and low energy can follow ingestion, and dilated pupils may occur in cats. Prevent access and seek veterinary advice after a known exposure.

The shrubby meaning of fruticosa

Fruticosa means shrubby or bush-like. The term refers to the structure of the ti plant. Linnaeus first published the species as Convallaria fruticosa. Auguste Chevalier moved it to Cordyline in 1919 without changing the descriptive epithet.
