Cultivar identity and origin of Cordyline fruticosa ‘Tango’

‘Tango’ is sold as Cordyline fruticosa ‘Tango’ and sometimes under the shorter name Cordyline ‘Tango’. People have grown ti plants across Pacific islands for generations, and they are now cultivated in many tropical regions. The species is native to Papuasia and parts of the western Pacific, where it grows in moist tropical vegetation.

Indoor care for Cordyline fruticosa ‘Tango’

• Light and colour: Keep ‘Tango’ close to a bright window with filtered light. Strong daylight supports the cerise and burgundy bands; add direct sun gradually.
• Water: Water when the top of the mix is dry and the middle is still slightly moist. Wet the pot evenly and let all excess drain.
• Temperature: Keep it above about 15°C and away from cold air around doors and windows.
• Humidity: Moderate humidity suits the broad crown. Airflow around the leaves helps them dry after cleaning.
• Potting mix and water quality: Use a slightly acidic, airy mix based on bark or coir with pumice. Because this species is fluoride-sensitive, use lower-fluoride water where practical; perlite and superphosphate fertiliser can also add fluoride.
• Feeding: Use a complete liquid feed at low strength while leaves are developing. Occasionally water the pot deeply with plain water to limit salt build-up.
• Structure and pruning: The upright canes support the foliage naturally. If a cane becomes bare, trim it back when the plant is putting out new leaves. Water and feed less often once growth slows.
• Repotting and propagation: Repot when roots crowd the container or the mix has compacted enough to make thorough watering difficult. Propagate ‘Tango’ from stem pieces or rooted shoots.

• New leaves lose much of their pink and burgundy colour: More light is usually needed. Increase filtered daylight gradually and compare the next leaves with the older crown.
• Pink edges dry and turn brown: Uneven watering, salts and fluoride can produce the same symptom. Keep watering more consistent, rinse the pot well and consider lower-fluoride water if the damage returns.
• New leaves open with silvery scars or black dots: Thrips may be feeding inside folded foliage. Keep the plant away from other houseplants and use a treatment whose label includes thrips on ornamental plants, following its repeat instructions.
• Small round or oval spots develop with yellow or coloured halos: A fungal leaf disease may be developing. Remove badly marked leaves, keep the crown dry and improve airflow.
• A dark wet patch spreads through the stem: Isolate the plant. Wet or slimy decay that continues to spread can indicate bacterial rot and means the plant should be discarded. If the damaged area is small and ends at firm, healthy tissue, cut it back with a disinfected tool and root a healthy stem cutting if needed.

What does the name Cordyline fruticosa mean?

Cordyline comes from Greek kordyle, meaning club, referring to its thickened underground stems. Fruticosa means shrubby and describes its woody growth.

Robert Brown established the genus Cordyline in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 280; Philibert Commerson had proposed the name.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Convallaria fruticosa in 1754 in Herbarium Amboinense, page 16. Auguste Jean Baptiste Chevalier later placed it in Cordyline as Cordyline fruticosa in 1919 in Catalogue des Plantes du Jardin Botanique de Saïgon, page 66.
