‘Rumba’ is a cultivated Cordyline fruticosa with narrow jade-green leaves, a burgundy central band and fine hot-pink margins. The precise two-colour outline remains visible as the blades lengthen around the upright cane.

Cordyline fruticosa has been cultivated across Pacific islands for generations. Its wild ancestry lies in Papuasia and the western Pacific, where it grows along warm forest edges and among moist secondary vegetation. Frequent tropical rain, humid air and filtered light surround its narrow, flexible leaves.

Light for fine pink margins

Give ‘Rumba’ strong filtered light directly by an east-facing window or just behind a sheer curtain at a brighter aspect. Good light supports compact growth and a clear pink edge against each green blade. Keep ‘Rumba’ close to the window with direct hot rays screened at midday. Acclimated morning light can support the narrow green-and-pink crown, whereas shade causes the crown to become sparse and the colour to look flatter and greener. Better conditions improve firmness and colour clarity without changing the inherited leaf pattern.

Watering the fine root ball

Water ‘Rumba’ after the upper few centimetres dry while the centre is still slightly moist. Pour water through the entire pot, then let it drain. An active leafy crown in warmth dries the pot quickly, particularly when roots have filled it. Low light, cool air and dense fine substrate keep the centre damp for longer. If the mix stays dry for too long, the leaf tips and margins turn brown; if the centre remains wet, the roots cannot get enough air.

Use quality houseplant substrate loosened throughout with pumice or perlite mixed with fine bark. Use small pieces of bark and mineral material around the fine roots so the mix does not leave large dry gaps or a soggy centre. This gives the fine, spreading roots some moisture between waterings while still allowing excess water to drain quickly. Heavy soil and compacted peat are unsuitable. If brown tips recur, rinse the mix thoroughly with low-mineral water.

Warmth for narrow flexible blades

Keep ‘Rumba’ between about 19 and 28 °C, with its root zone consistently above 16 °C. Prolonged temperatures under 15 °C are risky in damp substrate. The narrow leaves catch both cold draughts and hot radiator air, so use stable room warmth while the newest leaf is expanding.

Reducing dry tips along pink margins

Ordinary household air is workable for ‘Rumba’ when watering is even. A moderate rise towards 50–70% can reduce dry margins on the narrow coloured leaves, especially in heated rooms. Air should still move beneath and between the narrow leaves. Let a rinsed canopy dry promptly and do not treat misting as humidity control.

Low-salt feeding for fine pink margins

Give ‘Rumba’ a complete fertiliser on a 4–6-week cycle while new leaves and roots are developing. Start at quarter strength and use no more than half strength under strong light. Stay near quarter strength because the fine pink margins show salt damage readily. Adjust winter feeding to actual growth and the time the pot takes to dry. Run plain water through the pot occasionally before salts can accumulate.

Repotting without disturbing slender roots

Repot ‘Rumba’ when roots crowd the base, lift a cane, make water run down channels or leave the old mix compacted. Increase the width by just 2–4 cm and retain the centre of the root ball. The fine roots recover best when they are disturbed as little as possible. Work in warm conditions, replace only degraded substrate and separate a rooted basal cane only if size control is needed.

Balancing a narrow-leaved cane

Turn the pot slowly for balanced colour and cane posture. Cut an overlong bare cane above a sound node to encourage lower shoots, or separate a naturally rooted basal cane during repotting; clean each leaf with support beneath its midrib. Make small turns after an opening leaf has hardened so the leafy crown remains balanced.

Cut old foliage close to its cane and let dry sheaths release naturally. Support the midrib when wiping the coloured surface, or rinse the plant gently and allow air to pass through the wet crown.

The fine pink margins lose contrast

‘Rumba’s’ fine pink edge can look duller in weak light or on an ageing leaf. Clean the narrow blades and provide brighter filtered light gradually. Firmer, better-coloured leaves in the next flush show that the position is working. Extra fertiliser will not restore a mature leaf’s pattern, so judge the plant by the next complete flush.

Fine arching tips turn brown

The slender tips are easily damaged by a brief dry spell, excess salts, hot sun or contact with a cold pane. Check the root ball and recent position before acting. Correct the cause, flush residues if needed and trim only the dead point; keeping an already wet pot wetter will not cure tip burn.

One side of the layered crown becomes thin

A one-sided window can pull successive narrow leaves in the same direction, while repeated brushing can break the outer layer. Rotate the pot in small stages and give the crown space. If an entire side yellows, inspect that side of the root ball for cold or water damage. A simple lean points to one-sided light.

Leaves drop green after a temperature change

Green leaf drop is a common stress response to cold transit or a sudden environmental move. Keep ‘Rumba’ warm, hold light and root moisture steady and watch the central growth. A firm cane can rebuild; darkening or softening at the crown or nodes means the problem is progressing and needs prompt cutting back.

Cordyline fruticosa ‘Rumba’ is toxic to cats and dogs. Its saponins can cause vomiting, drooling, poor appetite and unusual tiredness after ingestion; cats may also develop enlarged pupils. Keep it away from pets and contact a veterinarian if any leaves or stems are swallowed.

Why older labels may say Cordyline terminalis

The ti plant was widely known as Cordyline terminalis, so that name still appears in older books and on plant labels. The accepted name is Cordyline fruticosa. Fruticosa means shrubby and describes its woody growth. The common name ti is much older, descending from related Austronesian names used across Oceania.
