Consolea rubescens is an upright Caribbean cactus with flattened green pads that branch above a slowly thickening base. The pads are thin, paddle-shaped and slightly wavy along the edges. In stronger light, the stems can show reddish tones, while small areoles carry fine glochids and occasional spines.
This species comes from Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands, in seasonally dry tropical habitats. It stores water in its fleshy stems and handles dry periods well once established. In a pot, it stays much smaller than plants in habitat, but young plants already show the upright paddle shape long before the lower stem thickens.
Consolea rubescens belongs to Cactaceae and grows with segmented pads. In habitat, mature plants can grow into small succulent trees. Container plants grow more slowly, with older lower growth firming up while new flattened segments form higher up.
The botanical name is Consolea rubescens (Salm-Dyck ex DC.) Lem. Opuntia rubescens is an older synonym. Mature plants may flower when they stay warm and get plenty of sun.
Consolea rubescens has glochids and occasional spines that can irritate skin and are difficult to remove. Handle with gloves or tools, and keep the plant out of reach of children and pets.
Consolea honours Michelangelo Console of the Palermo Botanic Garden. Rubescens means reddish or becoming red, referring to the reddish tones the stems can show in strong light.
