Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’

A variegated taro from a rain-rich tropical lineage

‘Tropical storm’ is a cultivated Colocasia esculenta selected for variegated foliage. Its pale markings belong to horticulture, while upright stalks, broad shield-shaped leaves and an underground corm connect it to taro.

The species has travelled with people since prehistory, making a single wild birthplace difficult to separate from its ancient cultivation across tropical Asia, New Guinea and the Pacific. Taro's natural setting lies in warm wet lowlands, including marshes, stream margins and rain-fed hollows where water remains close to the surface.

How to keep Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ healthy

Light

Grow Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ at the brightest east, south or west window available, using a sheer curtain only during unacclimated hot midday exposure. Direct sun supports sturdy growth, but pale sections can scorch before the greener tissue. Low light leads to long weak stalks, small leaves and slower replacement. Strong daylight supports the existing pale pattern; it does not create new Panaschierung or prevent naturally variable leaves.

Watering

Keep the root ball of Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ consistently moist during active growth, watering as soon as the surface begins to dry. Soak the complete pot and allow fresh excess to escape. Warm bright plants can use a shallow temporary reservoir, but cool or slow plants should not stand in stale water. Prolonged dryness damages fine roots and leaf margins, while permanent airless saturation harms the base. Pot size, leaf number and temperature determine how quickly the next watering is needed.

Substrate and roots

Give Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ a fine, loose mix that absorbs water evenly, using quality substrate or coir with fine bark and pumice or perlite. Its coarse roots and underground storage tissue need steady moisture but not an airless mass. Avoid deep compacted peat and oversized bark pieces. Keep the crown at its current height, provide free drainage and rinse the pot often enough that salts do not accumulate around the roots or mark pale leaf tissue.

Temperature

Maintain Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ at 20–30 °C and protect it below about 16 °C. Pale patterned leaves and active roots both react poorly to cold wet conditions. Keep the pot away from stone sills, cold panes and winter ventilation. Direct heater air can brown pale margins before the root ball becomes dry. Stable warmth allows the plant to keep using water and nutrients instead of sitting inactive in moist mix.

Humidity and airflow

Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ grows best with moderately humid air, roughly 55–75%, though ordinary room humidity can work if watering and temperature are stable. Pale leaf areas may brown sooner in a dry heater stream. Pair higher humidity with gentle air movement and let cleaned leaves dry. Routine misting can leave mineral residue and does not supply the volume of water used by the roots.

Fertilising

Apply a balanced complete fertiliser at quarter strength every three to four weeks while Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ is producing leaves and roots. Use no more than half strength for robust growth under strong light. Continue lightly at any time of year if warmth and active growth persist. Fertiliser cannot produce additional pale pattern, and strong doses can burn the roots, so feed moist mix and rinse it regularly.

Repotting

Repot Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ when roots and offsets fill the container, the crown lifts, watering becomes difficult or the mix compacts. Increase the diameter by 4–6 cm without adding unnecessary depth. Work while warmth and light keep the plant active, preserve the basal storage tissue and retain healthy roots. A rooted offset can be separated, but do not divide a weak pale shoot on its own. Keep all crowns above the fresh mix.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Keep the pale-and-green crown away from traffic because a bent leaf stalk rarely straightens again. Do not tie the separate leaf stalks of Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ together; a stable root ball and adequate light provide the correct support. Make small orientation changes after new growth has hardened and remove a dead leaf with a clean basal cut instead of pulling at the crown. Rinse with low-mineral water or use a lightly damp cloth under a firm leaf, avoiding rubbing pale tissue and soft newly unfurled growth.

Colocasia ‘Tropical Storm’ troubleshooting

A cream-white streak runs through the dark leaf centre

The bold central streak against purple-black foliage is the normal ‘Tropical Storm’ pattern. Its size can vary between leaves. Treat it as damage only when the tissue becomes soft, tears outward or develops an enlarging dead margin.

The pale centre turns tan and crisp

The cream tissue can scorch before the darker blade after an abrupt move into strong sun. Protect the compact plant while acclimating it and retain any firm green-black leaf area. A translucent or wet lesion spreading along the central vein needs removal and monitoring.

The compact plant produces small, weak leaves

‘Tropical Storm’ is naturally compact, so size alone is not a fault. A declining sequence of increasingly thin leaves during warm active growth points to weak light, depleted nutrition or failing roots. Check the corm and root zone before feeding.

All leaves yellow and die back in cool conditions

Colocasia can enter a rest when light and warmth fall, provided the corm remains firm. Reduce water as uptake stops and wait for active growth rather than forcing it. Green leaves collapsing suddenly around a soft, foul centre indicates rot, not dormancy.

The central shoot pulls away from the corm

This is an urgent growing-point rot sign. Remove wet substrate, cut out every soft section and retain only firm offsets with intact buds. Keep a salvaged crown at the surface and warmer while it re-establishes in fresh aerated material.

Pet Safety

Colocasia esculenta ‘Tropical storm’ contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and should not be chewed or swallowed. Contact with raw plant tissue can cause immediate mouth pain, swelling, drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing in cats, dogs and people. Keep the entire plant out of reach and seek prompt advice for any pronounced reaction.

John Cho’s patented ‘Tropical Storm’

John J. Cho selected ‘Tropical Storm’ in Hawai‘i in 2007. It came from a controlled cross between ‘Black Magic’ and ‘Nancy’s Revenge’ and was propagated from the resulting seedling.

The United States plant patent granted in 2017 records it as a cultivar of Colocasia esculenta. The patented description distinguishes it by compact growth and purple-black leaves marked by a contrasting cream-yellow central streak.
