Because the leaves are broad and thin, 'Stained Glassworks Spacecake' wilts quickly when the root ball gets dry. The plant has wide serrated leaves with pink-red centres and green edges, and early pinching creates more side shoots lower on the stems.
Warmth, filtered light and regular watering help it produce new stems quickly. When the base becomes woody, healthy shoot cuttings can renew the plant.
Coleus scutellarioides is a tender subshrub in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It has square stems, opposite leaf pairs and quick branching after pruning. 'Spacecake' has broader blades than 'Le Freak', so it usually needs closer watering checks in warm rooms.
The species naturally occurs from Indo-China to Nansei-shōtō and northern Australia. In indoor pots, it needs warmth, filtered light and a substrate that stays lightly moist while excess water drains away.
Keep 'Stained Glassworks Spacecake' out of reach of pets and small children. Wash hands after pruning or taking cuttings if your skin is sensitive.
Coleus scutellarioides is the current species name. Coleus refers to flower structure; scutellarioides means Scutellaria-like.
