Park Avenue’s botanical background

Dümmen Orange includes Park Avenue in its Main Street range of coleus. The magenta centre, burgundy field and mottled green outer zone are the selected colour traits of this Coleus scutellarioides cultivar.

The species has a warm native range extending from parts of Asia to northern Australia. Square stems, opposite leaves and ready branching show its relationship to the mint family. It is perennial in frost-free conditions, while in the European climate Park Avenue is grown indoors or enjoyed outdoors during the warm season.

Park Avenue care guide

• Light: Give Park Avenue a very bright setting of roughly 20,000–40,000 lux. Introduce direct sun in small steps so the magenta centre and mottled margins are not suddenly scorched.
• Water: Water thoroughly after about 25–40% of the mix has dried. A compact canopy can hide the soil, so check beneath the leaves and empty any saucer after drainage.
• Warmth: An 18–25 °C room supports active growth. Keep it clear of sub-10 °C conditions and wait for nights around 15 °C before placing it outside.
• Pot and mix: Use a fertile, airy substrate that remains lightly moisture-buffered. Repot when the roots fill the container or when the current volume dries faster than you can water reliably.
• Feeding: Supply a moderate dose of balanced nutrients while new stems are active. Reduce applications when the plant is cool, newly moved or no longer producing leaves steadily.
• Shaping: Park Avenue already branches into a compact form; pinch only stems that need shortening or extra side growth. Make each cut immediately above a node.
• Grooming and placement changes: Clean the textured foliage by gentle rinsing or brushing and skip leaf-polish products. Acclimatise the plant gradually whenever it moves between indoor shelter and outdoor sun.

Problems to watch for

• Compact shape begins to stretch: Move towards stronger light gradually and pinch only the stems that need extra branching. Wider gaps between leaves are a clearer low-light sign than a normal colour shift.
• Canopy wilts suddenly: Feel below the surface. A dry root ball needs a full watering; a wet one needs air, drainage and a check for damaged roots.
• Magenta areas look pale and dry: Direct sun introduced too quickly can scorch the centre of the leaf. Provide temporary shelter and judge the new position by undamaged replacement growth.
• Stems turn black or glassy: Cold injury is likely. Return the plant to a warm bright position and wait until the line between firm and soft tissue is obvious before trimming.
• Fine speckling or sticky residue: Inspect both leaf surfaces for mites, whiteflies, aphids or mealybugs. Isolate and repeat a control suited to the insect found.
• Distortion with yellow-brown patches: Check underneath for the grey-purple growth associated with coleus downy mildew. Separate the plant, avoid shared water and tools, and remove badly affected shoots.

Coleus scutellarioides can cause mild irritation. Contact with the leaves may irritate the skin, and repeated exposure can trigger an allergic red rash in sensitive people. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal discomfort.

Keep the plant and discarded cuttings away from children and pets. Wear gloves if your skin reacts during pruning, then wash hands and tools. After human ingestion, contact a local poison centre for advice; after pet chewing, contact a veterinarian or animal poison service. Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, breathing problems or collapse.

Coleus scutellarioides: name and meaning

The name Coleus refers to staminal filaments joined in a sheath-like arrangement. Its species epithet means “resembling Scutellaria”.
