Cultivar background of Alligator Alley

Main Street Alligator Alley is a Dümmen Orange foliage cultivar within the breeder’s Main Street series. The selection combines a broad lime outer zone with a dark central blotch.

Botanically, it is Coleus scutellarioides, which belongs to the mint family and originates across tropical and subtropical Asia, reaching northern Australia. The species is a soft-stemmed, warm-climate perennial with paired leaves on square shoots. Branching shoots hold Alligator Alley’s large patterned blades in an upright plant.

• Light: Set it in very bright light around 20,000–40,000 lux. Gradual sun acclimation supports firm, compact growth without burning the broad lime areas.
• Water: Check moisture frequently because the large soft leaves can lose water quickly. Irrigate after the upper 25–40% has dried, soak the pot evenly and allow all excess to escape.
• Temperature: The best range is 18–25 °C. Protect from readings below 10 °C and wait until nights hold around 15 °C before beginning a gradual move outdoors.
• Soil and repotting: Use a fertile, well-aerated medium that stays evenly moist but never stagnant. Move to the next practical pot size if dense roots or unusually rapid drying show that more volume is needed.
• Feeding: Apply a moderate complete feed during active leafy growth, always to damp substrate. Reduce it when cooler temperatures or lower light slow the plant.
• Branching: Pinch above a healthy node only where additional side shoots or a shorter outline are wanted. Support the stem with your other hand because coleus growth is soft and can snap.
• Leaf care: Rinse the broad blades gently or dust them with a soft brush, checking below them for pests. Avoid polish and shelter a newly outdoor plant from strong wind while it adjusts.

• Large leaves droop: Check the soil before acting. Dry mix needs a thorough watering, while droop above wet soil calls for a root and drainage inspection.
• Leaf edges crisp repeatedly: The broad blades can lose water quickly in heat or wind. Shorten the drying interval, shelter the plant and keep the substrate airy and free-draining.
• Long stems with small leaves: Gradually improve light and pinch selected shoots above a node. Retain enough healthy leaf area for recovery and shorten selected shoots gradually.
• Tan patches on lime areas: Pale tissue has scorched after a sudden increase in sun. Return to filtered light and reacclimatise with short, gentle exposures.
• Whiteflies, aphids or mites: Examine the large undersides carefully, isolate the plant and rinse off loose insects. Repeat an appropriate treatment according to the pest and label.
• Yellow-brown spotting and twisted tips: Look beneath leaves for grey-purple signs of downy mildew. Prevent splashing and tool transfer, remove infected growth and keep the plant separate while assessing recovery.

Safety when handling and pruning

Coleus scutellarioides can cause mild irritation. Contact with the leaves may irritate the skin, and repeated exposure can trigger an allergic red rash in sensitive people. Ingestion may cause gastrointestinal discomfort.

Keep the plant and discarded cuttings away from children and pets. Wear gloves if your skin reacts during pruning, then wash hands and tools. In scutellarioides, the ending -oides means “resembling”. The complete epithet means “resembling Scutellaria”, the skullcap genus.
