Alligator Alley is a cultivar of Coleus scutellarioides, a member of the mint family native to tropical and subtropical Asia and northern Australia. The species is a soft-stemmed, warm-climate perennial with paired leaves on square shoots. Branching shoots hold Alligator Alley’s large patterned blades in an upright plant.

Care for healthy tropical growth

• Light: Place it close to a bright window, with gentle morning or late-afternoon sun after acclimatisation. Gradual sun acclimation supports firm, compact growth without burning the broad lime areas.
• Water: Check moisture frequently because the large soft leaves can lose water quickly. Irrigate after the upper layer of the substrate has dried, soak the pot evenly and allow all excess to escape.
• Temperature: Keep the active crown warm and out of cold air, which can collapse the textured leaves.
• Soil and repotting: Use a fertile, well-aerated medium that stays evenly moist but never stagnant. Move to the next practical pot size if dense roots or unusually rapid drying show that more volume is needed.
• Feeding: Apply a moderate complete feed during active leafy growth, always to damp substrate. Reduce it when cooler temperatures or lower light slow the plant.
• Branching: Pinch above a healthy node only where additional side shoots or a shorter outline are wanted. Support the stem with your other hand because coleus growth is soft and can snap.
• Leaf care: Rinse the broad blades gently or dust them with a soft brush, checking below them for pests. Avoid polish and shelter a newly outdoor plant from strong wind while it adjusts.

Troubleshooting the broad leaves of ‘Alligator Alley’

Water the entire root ball and allow free drainage. If the pot is still heavy, inspect roots and the lower stem instead; broad foliage can look thirsty even when damaged roots are surrounded by wet mix.

A fixed papery mark follows abrupt sun more often than shortage. Return the plant to filtered light, then rebuild brighter exposure gradually and judge the position by undamaged new leaves.

The canopy becomes tall and loose

Increase usable light in stages and shorten selected firm shoots above a node. Keep enough healthy leaf area to support recovery rather than cutting the entire plant back at once.

Inspect the large lower surfaces for mites, whiteflies and aphids. Separate the plant, rinse away loose insects and use a control matched to the pest found. Expanding wet lesions require dry foliage and clean tools instead of an insect treatment.

When was Coleus scutellarioides first published, and what does it mean?

The name Coleus comes from the Greek word koleos, meaning “sheath”, and refers to the stamens joined at their base. The species name scutellarioides means “resembling Scutellaria”, another genus in the mint family.

João de Loureiro established the genus Coleus in 1790 in Flora Cochinchinensis, page 372.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Ocimum scutellarioides in 1763 in Species Plantarum, second edition, page 834. George Bentham later placed it in Coleus as Coleus scutellarioides in 1830 in Plantae Asiaticae Rariores, volume 2, page 16.
