Main Street selection ‘UF17-50-5’

‘Main Street Alligator Alley’ began as the University of Florida selection ‘UF17-50-5’. It came from open pollination in Gainesville, Florida, in 2016, with ‘UF16-33-50’ as the seed parent and an unknown pollen parent; one seedling was chosen in 2017. Its large crimson-and-chartreuse leaves, broad margins, fine pink midvein, strong branching, heat tolerance and reliable colour in sun and shade led to its release through Dümmen Orange as Main Street Alligator Alley.

Coleus scutellarioides is native to wet tropical regions from Indo-China to Nansei-shoto and northern Australia. Cultivated forms draw on the species’ natural variation to produce stable foliage patterns and branching habits rather than being grown mainly for their flowers.

Indoor care for ‘Main Street Alligator Alley’

• Light: Give bright filtered light indoors. Its colour stays reliable across a broad outdoor light range, but acclimatise an indoor-grown plant gradually before exposing it to strong direct sun through glass.
• Water: The large soft leaves can use water quickly in warm bright conditions. Rewater when the surface and upper part of the mix begin to dry and the pot feels lighter, then let excess water drain completely.
• Substrate and drainage: Use a loose houseplant mix that keeps some moisture available without remaining dense and saturated. A pot with an open drainage hole is essential.
• Temperature and humidity: Cold slows and damages the soft growth, so keep temperatures above about 15 °C and avoid draughty windows. Normal indoor humidity is usually suitable; very dry heat can speed up edge crisping, while stagnant damp air creates its own problems.
• Feeding: Apply a complete fertiliser at a moderate rate during active growth. Reduce feeding when shorter days slow the plant rather than trying to force soft winter growth.
• Shape: Alligator Alley branches well and naturally develops a broad mound. Pinch only shoots that run ahead of the canopy, cutting just above a node.
• Season and repotting: Water and feed less often as winter growth slows. Repot when roots fill the container, the plant dries much faster than before or growth remains restricted despite suitable light and nutrition.

Troubleshooting ‘Main Street Alligator Alley’

• The broad chartreuse margin turns tan or brittle: Check where the damage occurs. Browning on the brightest side points first to sudden sun exposure; crisping around the whole plant more often follows repeated drying or very dry heated air.
• The plant wilts while the substrate is still wet: Do not add more water automatically. Check the roots and stem base for soft brown tissue. If rot is present, cut back to firm healthy tissue with a disinfected blade, discard the rotten material and repot or restart healthy growth in a clean, airy mix.
• The broad mound opens into long weak stems: Low indoor light is the first cause to correct. Move the plant gradually closer to a bright window and wait for firmer new growth before shortening stretched shoots.
• Sticky shoots, cottony clusters or distorted new leaves appear: Inspect stems, nodes and leaf undersides for sap-feeding pests such as aphids or mealybugs. Isolate the plant, remove light infestations physically and use an indoor-ornamental treatment labelled for the pest if needed, repeating only at the interval stated on the label.
• Angular brown patches spread between the veins: Check beneath affected leaves for grey-purple growth associated with coleus downy mildew. Separate the plant, remove badly affected foliage, improve airflow and discard a severe infection rather than keeping it beside healthy coleus.

When was Coleus scutellarioides first published, and what does it mean?

The name Coleus comes from the Greek word koleos, meaning “sheath”, and refers to the stamens joined at their base. The species name scutellarioides means “resembling Scutellaria”, another genus in the mint family.

João de Loureiro established the genus Coleus in 1790 in Flora Cochinchinensis, page 372.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Ocimum scutellarioides in 1763 in Species Plantarum, second edition, page 834. George Bentham later placed it in Coleus as Coleus scutellarioides in 1830 in Plantae Asiaticae Rariores, volume 2, page 16.
