Codiaeum variegatum ‘Sunny Star’

Cultivation history and natural range of Codiaeum variegatum ‘Sunny Star’

The name 'Sunny Star' dates back at least to the early 2000s.

Codiaeum variegatum occurs naturally from Malesia to the south-western Pacific.

Codiaeum variegatum 'Sunny Star' plant care

• Water: Check the pot regularly and water once the surface of the mix begins to dry. Give enough water to moisten the full root ball and let the pot drain completely. Where tap water is very hard, room-temperature rainwater is a useful option.
• Light: Bright filtered light keeps the yellow-green pattern clear. Gentle morning or late-day sun can suit the plant once it is used to the brighter light; strong midday sun through glass can mark the leaves.
• Humidity: Keep the air moderately humid to support the long leaves and steady new growth.
• Temperature: Keep 'Sunny Star' warm and sheltered from cold draughts. Keep it above 15°C; normal warm room temperatures suit it well.
• Potting: A loose, free-draining, slightly acidic mix gives the roots both moisture and air. Use a pot with drainage holes so excess water can escape freely.
• Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser during active growth according to the label. When growth slows under cooler, darker conditions, water less often and pause feeding until active growth returns.
• Shape and repotting: Trim long shoots if you want the plant to become bushier. Repot when roots have filled the container, moving into a pot only one size larger.
• Propagation: Tip cuttings from healthy stems can be rooted during active growth in warm, humid conditions.
• Handling: Croton sap can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves for pruning. Swallowed plant material can cause stomach upset; place the plant where children and pets cannot chew it.

Codiaeum variegatum 'Sunny Star' common issues

• Leaf edges become dry and brown: Dry air, a root ball that has dried too far or uneven watering is the usual cause. Water thoroughly so the potting mix becomes evenly moist and improve humidity around the plant; the brown leaf tips guide gives more checks.
• The yellow pattern becomes faint: The plant is likely receiving too little light. Move it gradually closer to bright filtered light and watch the colour on the next leaves.
• Fine pale speckling or webbing develops: Spider mites are likely. Isolate the plant, rinse the leaves well and use a houseplant treatment labelled for spider mites and repeat it as often as the label says.
• Leaves drop after a cold spell or location change: Cold or a sudden change of position is the likely cause. Keep the plant above 15°C in a stable position and check the potting mix so the root ball stays evenly moist with good drainage.
• Several leaves turn yellow while the mix stays wet: If the potting mix stays wet for too long, the roots can be damaged and begin to rot. Unpot the plant, remove soft dark roots with a clean, disinfected tool, cut back to firm healthy tissue, discard the rotten material and repot in fresh free-draining mix. Follow the root rot guide if you find damaged roots.

Codiaeum variegatum ‘Sunny Star’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs, and avoid contact with its sap.
• The sap can irritate the mouth, digestive tract, skin and eyes.
• Exposure may cause burning mouth pain, vomiting, stomach pain, or skin and eye irritation. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop.

Codiaeum: name and publication history

Codiaeum is a Latinized form of kodiho, a vernacular name from Ternate in Indonesia.

Adrien Henri Laurent de Jussieu established the genus Codiaeum in 1824 in De Euphorbiacearum Generibus, page 33; Georg Eberhard Rumphius had proposed the name.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Croton variegatus in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 1199. Adrien Henri Laurent de Jussieu later placed it in Codiaeum as Codiaeum variegatum in 1824 in De Euphorbiacearum Generibus, pages 80 and 111; Georg Eberhard Rumphius had proposed the name.
