Rounded lobes and narrower sections give Codiaeum variegatum 'Excellent' its clearly lobed leaf shape. This lobed croton has leathery foliage in green, yellow, orange and red, with colour appearing across the blade rather than only along the main veins.
This cultivar grows as an upright branching shrub in a container. The stems become woody with age, while new leaves develop from the ends of the stems. With even watering and protection from cold, older stems are less likely to drop their lower leaves.
In the wild, Codiaeum variegatum is a wet-tropical shrub or small tree from Malesia to the southwest Pacific. It belongs to Euphorbiaceae and has given rise to many cultivated crotons with different blade shapes, markings and colours.
'Excellent' is grown for its lobed leaf form. The leaf edges are clearly lobed, with wider and narrower sections. In indoor pots, it stays smaller than outdoor tropical plants, but older stems still harden and become woody over time.
Codiaeum variegatum 'Excellent' is not suitable for pets or small children. The sap can irritate skin and eyes, and plant parts may irritate the mouth and digestive tract if ingested. Use gloves when cutting stems, and wash tools after pruning.
Codiaeum variegatum (L.) Rumph. ex A.Juss. is the accepted species name for this cultivar. The genus name Codiaeum is linked to the Ternate vernacular name kodiho, and variegatum refers to variegated foliage.
