Twisting, curling leaves define Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi'. The elongated foliage curls and spirals as it matures, with green, yellow, orange, red and purple tones held in a dense crown on upright woody stems.
In a pot, 'Mammi' grows as a bushy tropical shrub. Older stems become woody, while fresh growth forms at the tips and along side shoots. Older woody stems can produce side shoots after pruning.
Codiaeum variegatum is a wet-tropical evergreen shrub or small tree in Euphorbiaceae. It is native from Malesia to the southwest Pacific and has produced many cultivated croton forms, selected for leaf colour, blade shape and growth habit.
'Mammi' is also seen under the spellings 'Mammy' and 'Mammie'. While the curled leaves expand, dry roots, dry air and cold can distort new growth. Spider mites can also hide in folded or twisted leaf surfaces.
Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' is not pet-safe. Damaged leaves and stems can release irritating sap, so protect your hands when pruning or propagating. Ingested plant parts may irritate the mouth and stomach.
Codiaeum variegatum (L.) Rumph. ex A.Juss. is the accepted species name for this croton. The genus name Codiaeum is linked to the Ternate vernacular name kodiho, and variegatum refers to variegated foliage.
