Yellow flecks scatter across the glossy green leaves of Codiaeum variegatum 'Aucubaefolia', a spotted croton with upright woody growth. The markings sit across the green blade rather than following the veins. In a pot, it gradually forms a leafy shrub.
This croton holds its leaves best with warmth, even root moisture and no repeated moves. Lower stems stay leafier when the plant is protected from cold air and sharp watering swings. Once new shoots appear, longer stems can be trimmed to encourage a fuller shape.
Codiaeum variegatum belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree. Its native range runs from Malesia to the southwest Pacific, where it is found in wet tropical conditions. Cultivated crotons from this species vary widely in leaf shape, colour and pattern.
'Aucubaefolia' belongs to the spotted-leaf group. The pattern is flecked rather than veined or colour-blocked, which separates it from the strongly veined croton forms. Indoors, the plant gradually becomes woodier with age. New leaves form at the stem tips, while older stems become firmer.
Codiaeum variegatum 'Aucubaefolia' is not pet-safe. Cut or damaged stems release sap that can irritate skin and eyes, and ingested plant parts may irritate the mouth and stomach. Keep it away from pets and children, and wear gloves when pruning or taking cuttings.
Codiaeum variegatum (L.) Rumph. ex A.Juss. is the accepted species name for this croton. The genus name Codiaeum is linked to the Ternate vernacular name kodiho, while variegatum refers to variegated or patterned foliage.
