Cocos nucifera, Coconut Palm, begins with a single broad pleated leaf emerging directly from the coconut. Later leaves divide progressively into long narrow leaflets, transforming the seedling from a simple green spear into a recognisable feather palm. The large seed often remains visible at the base during these early stages.
A trunk develops only after years of successive leaves. Each fallen frond leaves a ring around the smooth grey stem, which may eventually curve under the weight and exposure of the crown. In tropical conditions, adult palms can reach around 30 m and carry 20–40 enormous fronds, each with more than 90 leaflets on either side. Branched flower clusters form among them and produce green, yellow, orange or brown coconuts whose thick fibrous husks surround the hard inner shell.
