The Excalibur Red Lime hybrid

Excalibur Red Lime was propagated at Excalibur Rare Fruit Tree Nursery in Florida and entered the University of California, Riverside citrus collection from budwood received in 2005. Nursery owner Richard Wilson described it as an accidental cross between Rangpur lime and kumquat. That reported parentage has not been confirmed genetically, but it clearly separates this plant from Key or Mexican lime, Citrus × aurantiifolia.

The UCR accession is filed under Citrus limonia, the Rangpur-lime group, while retaining the reported kumquat ancestry in its cultivar record. Excalibur Red Lime has no wild population or native range of its own. Its history belongs to modern horticultural selection in Florida, with older cultivated citrus lineages from Asia behind its reported parents.

Indoor care for Citrus hybrid ‘Excalibur Red Lime’

Light

Place Excalibur Red Lime in the strongest home light you can provide, ideally touching the light zone of a south- or south-west-facing window for at least six hours of direct sun. A grow light is valuable in a dim winter room. Mature leaves tolerate direct sun after acclimation, but a fast move from indoor shade to hot sun can scorch the canopy. Insufficient light stretches the shoots, reduces flowering and leaves fruit development weak. The red fruit colour belongs to the cultivar; fertiliser or shade cannot create it, though well-lit growth displays it best.

Watering

Allow the surface of the potting mix to partially dry, then check below the surface and water only when the centre is no longer wet. Apply enough water to re-wet the complete root ball and let the surplus drain away. Do not leave water in a cachepot. A developing crop raises demand, and prolonged dryness may cause curled foliage or fruit drop. Continuous wetness can kill the oxygen-dependent fine roots. Strong sun, heat, a small root-filled pot and fruit load shorten the interval. Cool weather, weak light, a plastic container and a recently enlarged pot lengthen it.

Substrate and roots

Excalibur Red Lime needs an airy root structure like other container-grown citrus: abundant fine pores for moisture plus larger pores that refill with air after watering. A citrus or loam-based container mix with fine bark and pumice or perlite is suitable. It should re-wet evenly and release excess water quickly. Compacted organic material and heavy soil smother fine roots, especially in cool rooms. Keep the trunk base above the wet mix, maintain a clear drainage path and flush periodically because citrus roots respond poorly to high salt concentrations.

Temperature

Normal indoor warmth supports active growth. Its reported Rangpur-lime and kumquat background suggests more cool tolerance than Green Lime, but a container plant should still remain frost-free and should not sit in cold, wet substrate. Cold glass, exterior-door draughts, radiator air and abrupt temperature changes can cause leaf or fruit loss.

Humidity and airflow

Normal indoor humidity is acceptable when watering and temperature remain stable. Moderate humidity benefits soft new leaves and flowers in very warm rooms, but a humidifier is useful only if the air stays persistently dry. Maintain gentle movement through the canopy and allow wet foliage to dry promptly after rinsing. Routine misting does not create the sustained humidity this citrus uses.

Fertilising

Use a complete citrus fertiliser that supplies nitrogen, potassium, magnesium and trace elements such as iron, manganese and zinc. Apply it according to the product label while the plant is actively making shoots, flowers or fruit; use the lower end of the labelled rate for a small plant, a recently repotted root ball or a specimen growing slowly. Reduce or pause feeding when cool or low-light conditions slow water use. Never fertilise a dry or waterlogged root ball, and flush the pot periodically with plain water to limit salt buildup.

Repotting

A new pot is needed when roots fill the perimeter, the ball lifts from the container, normal watering no longer penetrates evenly, or drying becomes very rapid. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the root ball. Citrus feeder roots recover best when the central ball remains intact, so repot near the start of active growth and minimise combing or washing. Release only tightly circling outer roots and trim none unless damaged. Set the plant at its previous depth and keep any graft union clear of substrate.

Pruning, handling and leaf care

Shape Excalibur Red Lime after a flush has matured or after fruit is removed. Shorten the few shoots that disrupt the crown, keeping many leafy tips for future flowers. If the plant is grafted, remove rootstock suckers below the union before they become woody. Thorns may occur along young stems, so move and rotate the plant by holding the pot and trunk base, away from fresh tips. Prop up a slender branch if fruit weight bends it severely. Dust reduces usable light; rinse the foliage or support each leaf during a gentle wipe and skip leaf polish.

When Excalibur Red Lime needs attention

• New leaves are yellow between greener veins: The roots may struggle to take up iron and other trace nutrients when the potting mix is too alkaline, cold or persistently wet. Check root condition and the pH of the mix before adding more fertiliser; the yellow-leaf guide helps separate nutrient patterns from watering damage.
• Leaves blacken or drop after cold exposure: Protect Excalibur Red Lime from frost, cold glass and strong draughts. Keep damaged growth dry, avoid heavy feeding and postpone pruning until living green tissue and dead twigs can be distinguished reliably.
• Cottony clusters, brown bumps or sticky residue: Mealybugs and scale shelter around leaf joints and young stems. Separate Excalibur Red Lime from nearby plants, gently remove insects you can see and apply an indoor-plant pest treatment as directed, reaching sheltered areas too. Use the scale guide when attached shells make identification uncertain.
• Fruit develops orange-red colouring: Changing rind colour is part of the hybrid’s maturation. Sunken, soft, cracked or wet areas signal a separate problem and should be inspected promptly.

Pet Safety

Excalibur Red Lime should be kept away from cats and dogs. As an aromatic citrus hybrid, its leaves, stems and peel contain concentrated citrus oils that can irritate the skin or digestive system. Chewing plant material or peel may cause vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargy. The fruit flesh is a lower concern than the oil-rich peel, but its acidity can still upset the stomach. Keep the plant and fallen fruit out of reach, and contact a veterinarian if a pet chews it or develops symptoms.

Why it is called Excalibur Red Lime

Excalibur Red Lime takes the nursery part of its name from Excalibur Rare Fruit Tree Nursery in Florida, where the hybrid was propagated. “Red Lime” describes the orange-red to deep red colour of the mature peel and flesh together with the fruit’s sharp, lime-like flavour.

The word “lime” is culinary rather than a placement in the Key-lime species. The accession is filed by the University of California, Riverside under Citrus limonia and is reported to have both Rangpur lime and kumquat ancestry.
