Citrus × limon can flower and fruit in cycles when it gets enough light, warmth and steady root conditions. It has glossy aromatic leaves, scented white flowers and yellow lemons with fragrant peel and acidic juice.
In a container, lemon grows as a woody shrub or small tree and can stay compact with pruning. Fruit develops slowly after bloom, changing from green to yellow as it matures, and a healthy potted plant may carry flowers, young fruit and ripe lemons at the same time.
Lemon is an old cultivated citrus hybrid with ancestry linked to pomelo, citron and mandarin. In a pot, it depends on a healthy root ball with enough air around the roots.
Yellow leaves, leaf drop or weak shoots often point to old substrate, cold roots or low nutrition.
Lemon peel, leaves and aromatic oils can upset pets if plant material is eaten. Clear fallen peel, leaves and pruned stems promptly, and protect your hands if the plant has thorny growth.
