Makrut Lime is immediately recognisable by its dark, glossy leaves. A broad winged petiole forms a second leaf-like section beneath each blade, creating the distinctive double-lobed shape. The round green fruit has a deeply bumpy, wrinkled rind and develops a yellow cast at full maturity.
Young shoots are angular, green and often thorny. Mature branches become woody and irregularly branched, while the thick aromatic leaves grow larger and firmer. In a large pot the plant can be maintained around 1.5 m. Small fragrant white flowers appear before the rough-skinned fruit, whose rind is far more strongly textured than that of an ordinary lime.
