Calamondin is a compact citrus that can flower and ripen orange fruit on the same plant in strong light with consistent watering. It has glossy leaves, scented white flowers and a dense crown that can be shaped with light pruning.
Also known as calamansi, Citrus × microcarpa has thin-skinned fruit with sour juice and a strong citrus flavour. Use the fruit for drinks, seasoning, marinades and preserves only from plants grown for edible use.
Citrus × microcarpa is a cultivated hybrid citrus in the Rutaceae family, with kumquat and mandarin ancestry.
Its slender woody shoots branch readily, giving the plant a dense crown with oval glossy leaves. White flowers can be followed by fruit that ripens from green to orange. The fruit stays much smaller than a mandarin, with sour juice and aromatic peel.
Calamondin peel, leaves and stems contain aromatic citrus oils and psoralens. Clear fallen fruit and loose leaves where pets can reach them, and handle thorny shoots carefully during pruning or repotting.
The name microcarpa means small-fruited, which fits the plant well. Calamansi is a common name widely used for the fruit and juice.
