The South Chinese roots of Sweet Orange

Sweet Orange developed through long cultivation in southern China.

Trade and growers carried sweet oranges through South Asia and the Middle East into the Mediterranean and, later, citrus-growing regions around the world. Countless named selections were developed along that route, including the navel, Valencia and blood-orange groups.

Growing Sweet Orange indoors

• Light: Give the tree direct sun across as much of the crown as possible. Bright light keeps new shoots compact and helps the tree flower and hold developing fruit. Introduce stronger outdoor sun gradually.
• Watering: Let the surface dry and wait until the deeper mix is only lightly moist before watering thoroughly. During active growth and fruiting, keep moisture reasonably even while allowing the mix to drain and partly dry between waterings.
• Mix and repotting: Use an airy citrus or loam-based mix that drains freely while holding enough moisture for a fruiting tree. Repot when roots are densely packed or the old mix has become slow-draining, increasing the container size in small steps.
• Temperature and humidity: Warm, bright conditions support active growth. Cooler conditions and lower light can slow the tree; keep it bright and frost-free, and reduce water and feed to match. Keep humidity moderate indoors and place the crown away from drying heat sources.
• Feeding and pruning: Use a complete citrus fertiliser while shoots, flowers or fruit are developing, following the label. Prune selectively after harvest or once new growth has matured, and support branches carrying a heavy crop.

Sweet Orange problems and practical checks

• New leaves turn yellow between green veins: Alkaline, compacted or cold wet potting mix can make it harder for the roots to absorb iron and other trace nutrients. Check drainage and root health before increasing fertiliser, and use the yellow-leaf guide to compare the pattern.
• Yellow foliage is paired with slow drying and leaf drop: Slow drying and leaf drop point first to root damage. Inspect the fine roots for soft dark tissue and a sour smell. Using clean, disinfected scissors or pruners, trim away soft or rotten roots back to firm, healthy tissue and discard the removed material. Replace waterlogged mix when necessary. • Fruit splits while still attached: A dry period followed by a sudden large increase in water can make the pulp expand faster than the rind. Keep root moisture steady during fruit development, rewatering after the surface dries and letting excess water drain fully.
• Sticky honeydew, bumps or black sooty growth develops: Scale insects are a common cause on citrus stems and leaf undersides. Isolate the plant, remove visible insects and clean residue from the leaves. Use a treatment only when its label lists the relevant pest and plant, and follow the label exactly for any repeat application.
