On Citrus ‘Arcobal’, rounded orange fruit can ripen with red lengthwise striping and red-toned flesh. The plant stays compact in a pot, with glossy green leaves and scented citrus flowers.
‘Arcobal’ forms a woody crown that can be shaped after flowering, after harvest or before strong new growth starts. The red colour is naturally variable. Some fruits show stronger striping than others, and ripeness, warmth and light all affect how much colour develops.
Citrus ‘Arcobal’ comes from ornamental citrus breeding in Acireale, Sicily. It was bred from Meyer lemon and double blood orange, which shows in its compact citrus growth and red-toned fruit.
The rind can ripen with red striping, and the flesh may also colour red. Give it sun, warmth and steady watering while fruit is forming.
Citrus peel, leaves and aromatic oils can upset pets if plant material is eaten. Remove fallen fruit, loose leaves and pruned stems where pets can reach them, and use gloves if shoots are thorny.
The name ‘Arcobal’ refers to the striped colour of the ripening fruit.
