Where the parlour palm comes from

Chamaedorea elegans is native from Mexico to Honduras and grows as a small palm beneath taller forest vegetation. Its natural habitat includes sheltered forest understorey.

Keeping the parlour palm healthy indoors

Medium to bright indirect light is ideal. Chamaedorea elegans tolerates a less luminous position better than many palms, although growth becomes slower and more open as the position gets darker.

Keep moisture even. Water when the upper layer of the substrate has dried, soak the pot evenly and let it drain. Reduce frequency when growth slows and never leave water standing around the roots.

Avoid very dry air and temperature swings. Normal household humidity is workable. Keep the palm away from radiators, hot draughts and cold air from open windows.

Use a moisture-retentive, open mix. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser about monthly while new fronds are developing. If your tap water is very hard, occasional watering with low-mineral water can help reduce salt build-up.

Common parlour palm problems

• New fronds repeatedly emerge smaller and growth stalls: low light, exhausted potting mix, crowded roots or roots kept wet for too long can all slow the plant. Move it gradually to brighter indirect light if the position is dim. Repot one size up only when roots are densely packed, improve drainage if the mix stays wet for many days, and resume light feeding once healthy growth is active. • Brown tips spread across otherwise green fronds: very dry air, repeated drought, hard water or excess fertiliser salts can all contribute. Stabilise moisture, keep the palm away from hot airflow and review our brown leaf tip guide before trimming damaged ends.
• Fine pale speckles and webbing appear between leaflets: spider mites are likely. Isolate the palm, rinse the fronds carefully and apply a treatment labelled for spider mites to both leaf surfaces. Repeat at the label interval, paying particular attention to the undersides.

Who first published Chamaedorea elegans, and what does the name mean?

Chamaedorea combines Greek chamai, on or near the ground, with dorea, gift. The Latin epithet elegans means elegant or graceful, an apt description of the fine leaflets and slender stems.

Carl Ludwig Willdenow established the genus Chamaedorea in 1806 in Species Plantarum, fourth edition, volume 4, page 638.

Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius first described Chamaedorea elegans in 1830 in Linnaea, volume 5, page 204.
