Browningia hertlingiana

A blue columnar cactus from Peru's inter-Andean valleys

Browningia hertlingiana is a tree-like cactus native to central Peru, especially the dry valleys of Huancavelica and Ayacucho. Its upright blue-green columns eventually branch to form an open crown above the surrounding scrub.

Wild plants grow on stony slopes in inter-Andean valleys at roughly 1,800 to 2,000 metres. Strong mountain sun, sparse rainfall and freely draining mineral ground define the landscape, while nights can be much cooler than days. The waxy blue surface and ribbed water-storing stems are part of this bright, dry, high-elevation setting.

Light

Place Browningia hertlingiana directly at a south- or west-facing window, or combine the brightest window available with a strong grow light. Acclimate the blue stem gradually to several hours of direct sun, since greenhouse-grown tissue can bleach or scar after an abrupt move.

Watering

Let the substrate around Browningia hertlingiana dry through the full pot, then soak the complete root ball and allow it to drain freely. Do not give repeated small sips around the stem.

Temperature

Keep the plant in warm growing conditions during active growth. Rapid temperature changes after watering can chill the root zone.

Humidity and airflow

Low to ordinary household humidity is appropriate for Browningia hertlingiana. Leave open air around the complete column and allow it to dry promptly after dust is rinsed away.

Fertilising

Apply a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser to moist mix at a low dose while Browningia hertlingiana is producing visibly thicker new growth. A warm plant under strong artificial or winter sunlight may remain active outside summer and can still use a light dose.

Support, pruning, handling and leaf care

Use a broad, heavy pot to keep Browningia hertlingiana upright; a healthy column should not need a permanent stake. If a young plant leans after repotting, use one loose temporary tie until the roots anchor again.

Browningia hertlingiana stem problems

The blue surface develops shiny green fingerprints

The pale blue bloom is a natural wax coating that rubs away when handled and does not regenerate on the same patch. Do not scrub or oil the stem. Handle the pot rather than the column and distinguish harmless shiny marks from soft, enlarging tissue.

The new column narrows and turns greener

A tapered, weak apex indicates insufficient light; greener adult tissue alone can be normal, but narrowing is not. Move the cactus gradually into stronger light and rotate it for even growth. Existing constriction will remain, so support a top-heavy stem until sturdier growth develops.

A pale tan patch appears on the brightest side

Sun scorch can follow an abrupt increase in exposure even on a high-light cactus. A burned area becomes dry and fixed, while rot stays soft and continues to spread. Protect the plant during acclimatisation and judge recovery by firm new tissue above the scar.

The base darkens and gives under light pressure

Softness at the cactus base signals advanced rot, commonly associated with moisture persisting in cool conditions. Unpot it, cut above the decay into uniformly firm tissue and let the clean wound seal before rerooting. A column with discoloured central tissue throughout the cut cannot be saved.

Cottony deposits gather between ribs and spines

Mealybugs can hide in the recessed areoles and may resemble loose fibres. Isolate the cactus and inspect with magnification; natural wool remains evenly anchored, while insects move or lift away. Remove visible colonies and repeat a labelled treatment, reaching every rib without stripping the blue wax.

Browningia hertlingiana has sharp parts

Where does the name Browningia hertlingiana come from?

Browningia honours Webster E. Browning, a former director of the Instituto Inglés in Santiago, Chile. The species epithet hertlingiana honours Mr Hertling, a German merchant and companion of cactus specialist Curt Backeberg.

Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose established the genus Browningia in 1920 in The Cactaceae, volume 2, page 63.

Curt Backeberg first described it as Clistanthocereus hertlingianus in 1937 in Cactaceae (Berlin), volume 1937, part 1, issue May, page 24. Franz Buxbaum later placed it in Browningia as Browningia hertlingiana in 1965 in Kakteen, volumes 31 and 32, genus C iv/I.
